March 2023 hatch-a-long

Pics
Exactly!!!

The ones I had in the incubator ended up not being fertile ( was hoping for one or two but evidently the cockerel wasn't up to the task yet when I had to get rid of him due to crowing (he had a beautiful song too, ordinances are so unjust)). Now I'm left lurking and living vicariously through others hatch stories and pictures. I could get fertile eggs but BF wants me to take a year off new chickens. Sigh.
Explain to him that it is your duty as an animal lover to make sure as many as possible (chicken math) have good, loving lives, and your the person who can best make sure it happens! :lau

When I candles last night, there were 3 eggs that had veins but didn’t look like they were moving much if at all. I remembered to write down which 3 eggs, and I checked them tonight. All 3 still have veins, and 2 were clearly moving…still not sure about movement in the third but better than losing veins and looking like a quitter!

I didn’t candle the rest. I’ll do that Thurs before they go into lockdown.

Got my brooder tub out along with feeders/waterers & heat plate. I use a Rubbermaid tub with the side removed and replaced with plastic fencing. It’s small, so I use it as a newborn brooder. Since these chicks are going to new homes, I don’t need to dig out the XL dog crate, and it’s too cold for the watermelon bin setup in the garage. Lol

This went by SOOO FAST.

Got a new candler so I did the full candle on day 15
Some looks like a slower than the others

I moved them around today
Gonna lock them down on Friday evening

Haha I m so impatiently waiting for Friday 😂😂
I'm hoping to sell them too. Not for profit but this is just a trial batch I wanted to hatch before weather warms up a bit

Here they come, how fun :wee

The moms are the best, especially when they trust you with them! So fun 🐣❤️
I let the one that went broody sit on some while I hatched the rest. She was left in the enclosure with the rooster and other two hens. Put my hand in to check out one of the chicks and got attacked by ALL of them, lol!

Now that the chicks are grown, even if still in the same enclosure, I can handle everyone just fine again.

That’s a good flock ❤️

7/8 hatched so far, just the wonky little oblong egg is left, and there’s movement inside.

Also, full disclosure…I’m sometimes a mega butterfingers klutz, and…I dropped an egg yesterday while candling and checking for movement (dumb)…It fell about a meter, the shell cracked bigtime, there was blood, omg I was so horrified…but…the chick hatched ok and is quite spunky! I think I will name it “Kaskader” (Stuntman in Polish). Not sure what breed, it was in a really light offwhite egg. Praying that it will grow up healthy!
