March Hatch A Long... anyone with me??

That chart says not to turn for FOUR days. That can't be right. I'm sure it's only 3 days.

idk... it does say to stop turning on day 18, which is the day I have heard you start lockdown on other sites... can anyone clarify??? Also, that chart has the standard humidity readings, and I have heard that dry hatches go better, so that is what I am trying. So far, so good.

There is so much conflicting info on this. Pro hatchers please chime in. I just found this info from Univ. of Missouri:

Turning should be done through day 17 of incubation, after which the chick is positioning itself for the hatching process. The most important period is from day 1 through day 12, when the chorion and allantois are developing and eventually fuse, forming the chorioallantois. During this time the most critical period is from day 3 through day 7, when the circulatory system is developing and beginning to function. Researchers have found that turning is not necessary past as early as day 14 of chicken egg incubation, although most systems continue to turn the egg through days 17 to 19

I just set 5 EE eggs and 1 BO egg------wish I had a couple more BO eggs to set, but that's all I want to hatch as I have 32 chicks coming in April. Sure hope these eggs do better than my duck eggs----they turned out ot be non-fertile and I had to throw them out. So, hopefully I'll have chicks on St. Patty's Day!

Guess that's fitting for the green/blue EE eggs----they can all have Irish names.

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I'm going to lockdown with 3 days left so I can make sure enough water will remain until they hatch. Only 8 days left for me and 6/7 are going strong!

How many times is eveyone candling? I have "touchier" eggs so not sure if i should candle twice - but just curious as to your rules of thumb?
I also have a cold right now - i read that you shouldnt be near the eggs or make sure you really wash your hands before handlng as you can pass germs? Is there any truth to this?

My eggs are set, hatch date 3/16:
1 doz storebought eggs
17 eggs from my chickens
(including 6 from my 'fuzzy' pair)
heres a pic of them, (Click to make it bigger)

Inkheart, I candled at 10 days, and then again as I was putting them in Lockdown.

i'm on day 21 just 1 more week then hatch day!

the extra week is killing me i'm ready now for the ducklings.

inkheart: i candle a fair amount usually around day 3 just to see if i can see anything then again on day 10 ish then again around day 14 and again before lockdown. although this time i have only candled 2 times around day 5 and again at about day 14 so

usually if i am refilling the water and the mood strikes me i will candle. i have the brinsea octo 20 incubator and to get to the water troughs you have to take the tray with the eggs out so i figure if they are already out might as well go ahead and candle

putting them in tonight....
also candled my polish, looks like 6 out of 12...not bad i guess... This was the second time i've candled. I put a green mark on the ones i thought were good and a red mark on the duds... i don't do enough candling to know if i'm doing it correctly.... so i hope this helps me...
Thanks Sharon
Melinda
adding...i don't think i'll be able to candle these....big smiles
