March Hatch A Long... anyone with me??

Hi,
frow.gif

I set 16 EE eggs (shipped) from BYC member "bargain" and 3 of my own BLRW eggs on February 25 for a March 18th hatch date. So far 15 of the 16 EE eggs are growing and 2 of my 3 BLRW eggs. I'm excited about the EE eggs since "bargain" send me mostly eggs from her pen that has a lavender Ameraucana rooster covering the hens, so I should get some really neat colored chicks!

Good luck everyone!

I candled last nite(day 5), was planning on waiting til day 10, but I just HAD to check. I can see veins in all of the eggs, except the storebought one (dark brown) and to 4 Dom eggs that went in 2 days late. I'm hopping I'll see something in the store eggs on day 10, they are dark, so I can't see in them very good.

Yes, this is a very exciting day!

2 in the brooder and 5 more zipping. I am amazed at this whole experience and am glad to have people like all of you BYC folks to share this thrilling day with .

Candled today (today 10). Culled 7 that either had not developed anything, or had developed a little bit and petered out early. We've had "accidents" involving a couple of dropped eggs. Started with 48 eggs, down to 35 now. I haven't candled the eggs under the broody. She did kick one egg out about 5 days ago, but I candled it & it showed good early development, so I brought it inside and put it in the incubator. This morning when I candled it, it has developed even further, and I can see the chick moving around inside so it's still cookin'. Lockdown is 1 week from tomorrow.

We are building homemade incubators this week, as well, to see how they fare against the name brands. We have had an ExoTerra (the whole unit died 2 days into the second hatch we ever did in it--had to return it, unfortunately). We are borrowing a Reptipro 5000 with automatic turners from a friend & it seems to be doing an excellent job so far (nearly effortless). We also have an LG forced-air incubator with fan, and I know people say things about the LG but this thing is holding steady even better than the ExoTerra did. We had one minor temp spike in the LG for only a few minutes one afternoon & I caught it (thank goodness I was home).

Between the ExoTerra, the Reptipro, and the LG, so far I like the LG the best.

I added another 7 bantam blue/black cochin eggs to the incubator last night, on top of the 6 serama, 5 bantam cochin, 6 olive eggers and 6 BLRW I already have in there! The first hatch is due March 13 and now the new batch of cochins will be due on March 22. Now I gotta dig out my old LG to use as a hatcher! Very excited for our first big hatch of the year!

Although I attempted a small hatch in early feb and put in 7 of our BLRW, but only one was developing, so I shut down the bator and stuck the one egg under our broody silkie, and that little BLRW hatched late Sunday or early Monday!! So I guess technically that little one is our first to hatch this year.
