March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

Hi, it's be a waste of chicken eggs, but that's not as bad as a waste of duck eggs. I have a mule duck (cross between a domestic and a muscovey) which bonds with a hen and they try to nest.
He's destined for the table one day, but serves as pecking distractor for the one turkey hen who has set herself up as THE watchbird in the pasture (enclosed area is 1/4-1/3 of an acre I guess). Keeps the hen laying which is good for duck egg sales.
Still no sign of ducklings from any of the three muscovey nests. turkey poult #6 has chipped out a small piece of eggshell. #4 is almost out of the shell, #5 is almost done unzippering it's shell.

So far, I still have 21 of 24 and I'm on Day 10 with my duck eggs.

They will be the same barnyard mix as Skittles, Topper and Midge - Cayuga, Sussex, Pekin and some of those have tufts. I do have room and ability to separate chickens and/or ducks if I want to sell purebreds, but these ones shouldn't be a problem around her!

My first batch for March goes into lockdown on the 11th. The eggs are of the Unknown Brown Chicken Egger variety, so I'll need help ID-ing them.

ok folks, got a turkey pipping. tomorrow is due date.

Started on my hugelkultur garden area today, about 1/10th done. one of my goats thought the seat on the riding mower was just the best thing to jump on and lay down in.
:DDD

Well, I re-candled tonight (day10) and all of BCM's are duds. They were expensive eggs too and I didn't even have them shipped; I picked them up and handled them carefully. I bought them at the same time as the buff brahmas and they're all doing great so... My guess is that because the BCM's are so popular with the particular hatchery I bought them at, that the quality is slipping. Oh well. Next time.

Hrm. Bators full and I have almost 2 dozen eggs sitting on the counter. What to do!? I'm seriously coinsidering firing up my wonky home-made bator. :/ seems like no one wants EE's. *shrugs*

I just had to add water to the BMA, and grabbed a random egg to candle. It's developing! So happy. Won't find out about the others until Thursday, but one for sure is good for me, especially since they were shipped across the country!

I have a question about blood rings though. What are they, and does anyone have any pictures of one? Thanks.

NOTE: When it says Blood VEIN, It actually means Blood RING. A blood VEIN is a good thing! XD

Another blood RING
A blood ring means that the chick has died. Even if you think you see one, do not throw out the egg for a couple days and candle later to see if more development has occurred since the blood ring could be a mistaken VEIN

Hi Ya'll

this is my first time setting eggs. I have small incubator, only holds 7 eggs, so I started this morning. My chickens are a mother daughter project. Figure this is a way for my nearly 12 year old daughter and I to share something without arguing

. We set all types of eggs including Swedish, Silkie (maybe a Showgirl) EE and couple of EE that may be Frizzies. I love them all so I just hope for a good hatch. We will see in 21 days.

PS Sorry to hear about the tooth. Hope you feel better soon.
Great breeds! Good luck!

99-100 is exactly what you want throughout incubation :)
Unless it's an still- air incubator! I kept my temps at 100 last incubation with my still- air incubator, and only one chick hatched out of 17. Temps. are very important!

Well, tomorrow is lockdown for me. My last hatch was a disaster so hoping this one is better. I havent candled again but think I have 10-12 eggs the should/might hatch. Most are white silkies and maybe a couple partridge silkies. I set 22 eggs but some were very old so only 15 started to develop. Had a couple bloodrings and a couple that look like late quiters. I am using a Brinsea Eco 20 for the first time . Keeping my fingers crossed!
Good luck! My last hatch sucked. From 17 eggs I had 1 hatch. I now have 8 viable eggs with great looking embryos going into lock down tomorrow as well!

OK, so I came home from the dentist, took my meds, and now I just put incubator 2 on lockdown!! I candled and SMELLED all 32 eggs, removed one that I checked a few times before deciding on it being a quitter and locked the rest down....i have THIRTY ONE moving and kicking and I think one of those teeny tiny silkies may have already pipped inside!!!

The scariest thing NOW is the humidity. CLEARLY it was not high enough last time, so I am going to try and keep it 75% and up til the end now. The last bunch was a mess!!! I still cant believe I got my lockdown days off, lol!!! Here we go again!!!
