I started collecting eggs today for my next set. DH loves his Barred Rock hen...
so that's who I'm collecting from. She lays an egg just about every day and I only plan on incubating 3 of her eggs, and I'll fill the rest of the incubator with 4 EE's (incubator holds 7 eggs). The EE eggs are super easy to pick out, so I will just collect those on Thurs & Fri. If I can manage it, I might squeeze in more than just the 7 eggs to begin with and hand turn them for the first week until I can take out the duds. However the EE shells are quite thick and the BR eggs are dark. And... I'm not that good at looking in the first place and already afraid I wont be able to pick out the duds. LOL.
I'm hoping I have the right eggs from the barred rock. I'm pretty sure her eggs are the darker brown, slightly elongated, and usually has speckles. So those are what I'm hording. It would suck for hubby if I end up incubating the New Hampshire's eggs! I know her's look similar, but I think her's have a slightly more terracotta color to them. I guess we'll see when they hatch cuz a barred rock looks quite a bit different than a New Hampshire! Sorry hubby if I'm wrong. (I guess if I get it wrong, we'll just have to incubate more!)
All the hens are being treated to a wonder romantic dinner and wine from our Light Brahma rooster in my avatar. So we will have some Barred Rock/Brahma mixes, and some Easter Egger/Brahma mixes. I think it would be neat to get an easter egger that lays blue eggs and has feathered feet. Not sure how likely that would happen... just a thought.
