March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

what medication do you give for cocci? i don't think it ate bedding...the pine shavings are pretty big. i do see them on occasion pecking at it but i don't think they are eating it...i guess we will see what happens...i'm still doing electrolights and sugar water a few drops every hour. she is secluded so the others aren't trampling on her but she is under the light. she is just laying there sleeping.

i did notice her being a little off before we left but thought she was just exhausted from hatching and would perk up, but since yesterday she is just lays there eyes shut sleeping all the time...the one that I found dead at 3 this morning seemed just fine. i did rearrange their brooder to give them more room, the rest seem just fine. I just don't get it...i'm so confused.

Corid is the medication.

And yes you can take that shell off if you want. Also, feather sexing only works with birds who carry the fast-feathering gene. I tested it on some of my birds that were sex-linked and there was no correlation :\

Grr... Oh well. I'm still waiting for next week when they start growing in their feathers - then I'll find out if Stormy's a frizzle or not! I just put Raine out with Stormy. Other than being very confused, Raine was okay... Going to check again in a little bit.

That chick just died. But the others are doing just fine. My theory is that it was weak already from day one, I wasn't here all week so I guess it just kept going down hill from there. I was wondering can I put acv in their water? Can I make them fermented feed? Will herbs and acv hurt them?

I made the older flock that is almost a year old now fermented feed several months ago...I changed them to scratch that my local co op makes themselves, I put a lid full of oregno, parsley, cyanne pepper, and acv. I cover it with water...they love it. I feed several laddle fulls every morning. And ive not had one health problem from them at all, they've laid well all winter.

These chicks are a week old today, so you think it will be ok for me to put their chick feed with said herbs and acv once a day. I just hate for them to be dying like this...I'm going to put sugar and electrolytes in their waterer...what else should I do??

Thanks!!

I am on lock down!
I also set 38 dozen eggs yesterday. I can't wait till lock down on those! That is going to be one exciting day

Raine and Stormy are doing great - I'm going to fix up a boot for Raine's crooked toes tomorrow. However, Raine has someething covering her back - is this sticky chick? Do I just rinse and blow dry under warm water and will it come off?

This is what I ended up doing. I think what happend was his wing got over his head. I think I need to chip down more. I hope he makes it... He's such a pretty color, from what I can see.
This is what I just did... And look at him now! I hope he can finish on his own.. Should I go ahead and tear that piece of membrane by his leg?
Here's Raine this morning...

S/he has two legs and is walking around the 'bator this morning! Only, the shell is still covering his rump... Should I go ahead and pull that off? Or just wait for it to come off? Stormy will be so happy to have a buddy!
Thank you... I'm so glad I was able to help him... Here's Stormy last night in the brooder, with a small stuffed cat's leg for size comparison:

And here's Raine right now.. Should I go ahead and take off that big piece of shell stuck to him?

Also, one of his toes on one of his feet is a little crooked... Can someone direct me to the thread on how to fix that using band-aids? Thank you...

You did an amazing job. I would take she'll off of butt. And take two round band aids and sandwich the foot between the band aids to make it a boot. Make sure toes are equally separated and it should be fine in about three days. Good luck and congrats!

Yes run chick under warm water. Keep head out of water and blow dry but don't let chick get too hot from blow dryer. I had some chicks with sticky stuff and did this and they are all fine
