That chick just died. But the others are doing just fine. My theory is that it was weak already from day one, I wasn't here all week so I guess it just kept going down hill from there. I was wondering can I put acv in their water? Can I make them fermented feed? Will herbs and acv hurt them?

I made the older flock that is almost a year old now fermented feed several months ago...I changed them to scratch that my local co op makes themselves, I put a lid full of oregno, parsley, cyanne pepper, and acv. I cover it with water...they love it. I feed several laddle fulls every morning. And ive not had one health problem from them at all, they've laid well all winter.

These chicks are a week old today, so you think it will be ok for me to put their chick feed with said herbs and acv once a day. I just hate for them to be dying like this...I'm going to put sugar and electrolytes in their waterer...what else should I do??

Thanks!!

I'm behind posts, not sure you got a response yet..but, I would stop the electrolytes. If they are a week old, they don't need it any more. If the others are acting better, maybe you are right, and the other two that died were just not strong enough to make it..and these others will be fine. I even stop the medicated feed after the first week. They just don't need all of the extra stuff in them, my opinion! Don't give them acv yet! Too young.

Do u think fermenting some feed for my chicks will be ok? I put parsley, oregno, acv in the older birds feed -cover it in water. Oh and cyanne pepper but I dnt think I would do that for the little ones. After loosing the 2nd chick I'm super paranoid....I'm going to get vitamins and medicated feed tomorrow. Can I get cornid and vitamins at tsc?

I'm so panicky of loosing anymore.....

Just give them plain ol chick feed..they will do great. :))

Arkansas.. I do a mix of greens (any kind will be fine), fresh apple, fresh raw garlic, and plain yogurt...chop up the fruits and veggies really small (food processor works good but don't turn it into liquid) and mix those with about a tablespoon of the yogurt, then mix in some chick starter. Talk about happy chicks!!! Mine LOVE this combo and the yogurt totally keeps the pasty butt away! I only give them this mixture once a day and the rest of the time they get plain starter but let me tell ya...they'd rather get the mix EVERY TIME! I raise heavy feathered breeds..ie LF Cochins and Brahma's, so pasty butt can be an issue but ever since I started feeding them this mix, I've had very healthy chicks!

Thanks to everyone for their support...it's been a rough few days and I appreciate all the kind words and hugs. Nothing can replace the one's I lost, but the new babies do help to heal the broken pieces of my heart. My very first egg from my own flock of geese will be hatching in a couple more days! I'm so excited to meet this baby! I pray that all goes well!
