March Hatching Madness

This hatch is complete ....
22 Delawares
3 RIR
4 Lavender Ameraucanas
1 tiny Cochin
3 B/B/S Orps
3 Silkies
My broody Silkie hatched out 1 herself! She and her sister were sitting on eggs. One day the sister got up to go eat and poo. While standing near the doorway of their little coop, a hawk came down and killed her. The remaining broody hatched one, despite having pooped all over the eggs!

I'm just curious for all of you that hatch on a regular basis, or have just hatched a large number of chicks,.....what do you do with them. Do they all go in your flock, do you hatch to sell them?

I ended up with 6 babies. 5 from my white hen/blue roo and 1 from purchased eggs. The lady I bought them from felt bad that I had such a bad hatch rate and sent me some replacements. They went in the bator today with some b/b/s and lav split orps and a bunch of mixed brown egg layers and I put three eggs under my silkie hen that just went broody. Itty Bit is the one I hatched on day 25. You can see he is so much smaller than everyone else. I thought for sure he wasn't going to make it. He still had his umbilical cord attached as was so weak. I think he may be an orp mix because of the white on his chest and he only has 4 toes instead of 5. What do you guys think? These are my first silkie babies so I have no idea what is normal for coloring but I do know that 4 toes isn't normal. You can see him pictured with the white chick and again peeking from the back of the group pic.

Mine are either going into my laying flock or the breeder Flock. I have a breeder project I am considering, that will require more chicks to be hatched and then the culls will go to the layer flock. As I only want to breed the best of the best.

I have a small community that may wish to purchase some chicks later in the Spring.

I also have one local farmer who would like me to hatch eggs from his hens for him to triple his flock. Since I have the Brower Galvanized incubator that might be possible. since he would like 100+ to help replace his older hens.

This is my first year hatching... started last August... and now that I have enough layers I'm starting to sell the extras. Silkies I hatched because someone asked for Silkies, then disappeared when I had em. :lol

Mine went into lockdown last night. Temps are holding nicely and the humidity is around 68. I did have to discard another 5 eggs that didn't develop, but all the rest looked really promising. I should have 60+ chicks by the weekend.

OK... It's my first time incubating and hatching as well as first time for everything else. Today is my day 20 for my 14 Wheaton Marans Eggs from Wheaties and I had to run on here and announce that I have found 6 eggs pipped and I am so excited to see that there is movement and life. I didnt candle or handle the eggs at all so the nervousness of not knowing if I was doing ANYTHING right and if any at all were alive was killing me. I can't believe just how excited I am. i feel like im skipping around my house today LOL... I bet you all are laughing at me. I just had to get on to share. Pictures will be available as soon as I have more. YAY
