March Hatching Madness

Ok due to interest from a few local people (wanting chicks) we have set 30 eggs this morning, after weights were taken on each egg, numbered for easy reference, & were candled for shell quality, at 9:59 AM the incubator was turned on; these are due to hatch April 8th.

This will be my last hatch until Spring (warmer weather) actually arrives!

Okay, today I am setting my third hatch ever as well as my third hatch this year. My husband walked through the office earlier, saw the eggs sitting out on the table before I put them in the incubator and just walked away shaking his head and laughing - but he didn't say a word (he's really a very smart man).

Anyway, I have in the incubator at this moment from the following breeds:

10 Silkie
7 Blue Splash Marans
8 Blue Langshan
5 Blue Jersey Giant (one is a double yolker)
8 Ameraucana X Araucana

Hatch date is April 8th!

Wow what a hatching frenzy. I now have 18 fuzzy butts with about 10 more in the process of pipping and zipping. So far at least one of every breed has hatched.

This time we got 12!
All but one managed to get out on their own, even one who hadn't fully absorbed the yolk. I checked them around midnight and one looked like it had just hatched and blood & goop all over. I was going to cull it right away, but when I picked it up I realized that it seemed OK other than about 20% of its yolk sack still hanging out. So I quickly took a piece of thread tied a tight knot around the base of the naval to stop the bleeding and cut off the rest with a pair of scissors. To my surprise this morning it was fine! Running around eating & drinking, just a little smaller than the rest.

So far so good! 3 clutches set and 31 chicks hatched this year. One broody on her own, and two batches in the bator. Two more hens went to setting this week, I may need a bigger place!!

Today is day 21 for me. Hatched 18 out of 26 so far with three more pipped. 70% hatch rate and counting. 4 Barnevelders, 6 Delawares (shipped eggs) and 8 Barred Rock Roo crossed with Black Australorp hens from my flock. So far so good!
