I think we had Marek’s in one of our chicks delivered a week ago from McMurray Hatchery
She has been off for 4 days or so, just seeming very weak, having a hard time getting drinks and food. Yesterday I really watched her and it dawned on me she seemed blind. After that realization her behaviors made complete sense. We were prepared to help her thrive as a blind chicken, but as I read about Mareck’s (looking for reasons a chick would be blind), other symptoms matched like difficulty in eating and drinking (her attempts didn’t seem very fruitful), weakness in her wings, and difficulty standing. She was a Golden Polish. As you all can understand, I am super disappointed. We did have our chicks vaccinated. We also didn’t realize that medicated food would negate the vaccine. So she got 1.5 days of medicated food before we got some unmedicated food.
I think all of my questions cannot be answered - how did we get Mareck’s, can we get a 100% diagnosis without spending an arm and a leg. Thankfully the older chicks were not exposed and we’ve been washing hands between handling the two flocks. I’m going to switch out all of the bedding and sanitize the food and water dishes today to help minimize the spread.
I’d love to hear your experiences as any recommendations. <3
