Mareks experience needed. prelim results pg 9

Krista, I know what you mean when you do everything you can right and still end up with a major epidemic.

He said he had Marek's in his flock. Well, most people do, so I've read. My Polish eggs were hatched here, sitting under silkies that were immune from exposure, and had immune offspring. They are still carriers.

Vaccinated chicks are still carriers if exposed. And I read that the vaccine prevents tumors, but they still get Marek's and I am not sure if the vaccine prevents "neural" type Marek's that is not tumors but inflammation of the nerves (although they can also have tumors on their nerves.)

I mistook my first hen and chick for broken legs. The third made me realize that it wasn't a broken leg. The hen with the ""broken"" leg was recuperating in a covered pen with the chicks.

Krista, I'm very sorry about your diagnosis. I am beating my head against a wall trying to think how you could avoid culling all those chicks. I just don't know. From my chicks dying, I know that my flock is a carrier since the chicks hatched here.

4/10 of mine are dead from the chicks. One is still in isolation, he had paralysis, but recovered. He never lost his appetite. The wasting chick was put in with him a week ago. Now I wonder if the one in isolation will catch a different strain (?) since their symptoms were both different.

I hope maybe the breeder/source can find it in his heart to at least send you some eggs, then you can vaccinate yourself.

None of my older flock has been affected. The ones over the last few years were all under 8 months old. And I have others that were in the same hatches that are still here. I had one JG die wasting away, but have 4 others from that hatch still here. I had 3 eggs hatch over a year ago, the first one wasted away before she was a year old. The 2nd one then wasted away a few months later. I still have the roo who was in that hatch.

The white silkie pullet that I bought (the only one not hatched here) seems to be the one who brought it in. She was quarranteened for 30 days because of a snotty nose.

Krista, as sad as it is, now you won't have to guess anymore.

Now I got another one , a 13 wk old pullet Polish that's fading away. Can't walk or eat. Out of 10 chicks, I have 3 left and one recovered(?). I just can't believe this is happening.

I thought I'd update. The cockerel chick that recovered is getting wing and leg paralysis. The pullet is showing the classic leg forward leg back symptom aside from not eating. They will go to heaven tonight.

I have 4 left, 2 boys , 2 girls.
