Mine are in a large enclosure that abuts up to my house. It has 6 foot dog panels for the exposed three sides and netting over those to keep out sparrows and netting over the top to keep out hawks. I have Nite Guard devices on the three exposed sides that are solar powered and blink red all night long. So far I have been blessed by not losing any to a predator. They have several places to go in or hide in if they do feel threatened. I hope you get to get some someday as they are so enjoyable but yes, messy. lolFor sure! I would live to have some but it would mean making a predator proof house and run. Some day. I'm fond of runner ducks, too.
