DH stories are a trip...

Mine came home yesterday, and I was holding the cross beaked Polish on my lap...she was snoozin' away (I cannot even begin to describe my shock as to how gentle, sweet, and cuddly these two pullets are!). DH just looked at me, rolled his eyes, and said "Lord have mercy"...and continued walking into the kitchen. Mama said "Isn't she gorgeous? And they are PETS, not food." DH said "THEY???" and Mama said "Yep, "they"...we've got her sister too". More eye rolling from DH. I could tell he was mad, so I gave him the silent treatment for an hour. Finally he said "Baby, is something wrong?" (Duh, that would be why you GET the silent treatment). Me: "Nope, nothing." Door slam. DH: "What's wrong with you?" Me: "Well, let's see. First you tell me you don't care if I get more chickens. Then I hatch eggs and you act all ****** off because it means more chickens. Ignore the whole incubation process until you see an egg with the number 2 written on it, and claim it as yours. Then, once they hatched and start peeping in the brooder, you complain about the noise. Then we have company and you want to show off the new chicks...the same ones you've been complaining about. I kill and process Zeus because he attacks our son, and my mom, and go get another rooster from down the road. You had no problem with it. Then when all the pullets wouldn't stop beating him up, and I told you I had to go get him a girl, you get mad...until you see her, and then you're ok with it. Now with these two new ones, you're ****** off...yet you said "I DON'T CARE IF YOU GET MORE CHICKENS"!!! So which is it? I can have more chickens, or I can't? What is the problem with these two new ones?"
Silence for about a minute.
DH: "Your mom said they're pets."
Me: "Yes, that's right. One has a crossed beak, the other a spine injury. So they can't be bred, and can't be eaten...they are special needs chickens."
DH: "Do they lay eggs?"
Me: "Yes, they lay eggs. Not yet because of their age, but yes...these two chickens will lay eggs."
DH: "Oh, well that's ok then."

The spouse often comes more slowly to the darkside. My husband has been pretty much the same as yours throughout. If he doesn't have to build anything for it he's okay with it. If money is strapped, he doesn't want to hear that I want $50.00 of hatching eggs. If the brooder's are already full, I should not bring home more chicks from the feedstore. If I need him to do anything chicken related I have to wait for the perfect time to ask. It is all in that timing though. He loves my chickens. Often I find him shutting up the coops alone in the evening, on icy mornings he'll help me with the waterers, and plenty of times I'll catch him baby talking at the brooder. 2 months in a row I've gotten him to go out for drinks with my crazy chicken friends. Like I said...they come slowly...but they all come eventually!

Good morning! My morning's not so great. Power went out about an hour ago, my boys are arguing over everything and I'm apparently only going to get one cup of *hot* coffee due to the power issue. Gggrrr. I'm sure my bator eggs will be okay but my NYD chicks are in an outdoor brooder (15 of them) with a silkie mama and her 3 chicks. Do y'all think they'll be okay? Usually they get the power back on within an hour but with being Sunday, who knows.

IDK...what are your temps? I killed a brahma once by having him on no heat. It didn't take too long either. Everyone else was feathered out, but he was a roo, and his feathers just wouldn't grow in. I didn't take that into account, turned off the heat...later that day he was dead, and everyone else was happy running around. A couple of hours shouldn't be too bad, but anything over that, I'd do something.

Actual temp out is 39 real feel is 33. I'm hoping with 18 chicks, 5 ducklings and a mama hen they'll be okay. All I know is the kids are making me nuts and I'm cold.

Do you have a way to heat up water? Last year we were without power for 5 days, and I had chicks in a brooder inside the house. We have a generator, but hubby was at work when the lights went out and couldn't do anything...so I heated water on the woodstove, poured it into empty mini soda bottles, and put the bottles in the brooder as a source of heat. I had to change the water in the bottles when they cooled which sucked (about every hour or so), but it kept them warm...

Lmao! I solve that problm by not bothering to ask. Since JJ & I aren't married, I pay all bird expenses, build my own coops/brooders, & the birds were here before him I honestly don't give a rip whether he likes my birds or not. They were here before him & will still be here when he's gone. That being said, he does most of the feeding & watering & at least helps with coop/brooder building most of the time though he gripes about it a lot. It was his idea to get a ton of ducks & geese last summer even though I warned him about the mess. He finally realized I was right about the mess & we parted with all but 2 geese & 14 ducks last month. Now he wants to go to all turkeys. He had tried to get me to get frid of the chickens to get more waterfowl. That didn't happen. Now he likes the chickens again. He has no clue what he wants. I'm the only one who has any bird-sense...yeesh!

If yiu check on them & they look cold I would bring them in. If you put them (broody included) in a couple boxes they will be able to maintain heat much better & have a better chance.
