Marking eggs. What can I use?

I want to mark some of my hatching eggs with datesand breeds. I know that pencil is safe but it always rubbing off and fading. Is permanant marker alright because I am sure I have seen people using it, but I don't know if it is safe. Thanks

a lot of people use sharpies

You could use crayon, too, but that may rub off also.
