Is it safe to mark the shell with date or info while in the nest? Pencil or permanent marker?

Is it safe to mark the shell with date or info while in the nest? Pencil or permanent marker?

I typically use a date stamp, only lightly inked. I also use pencil and a grease pencil. I would stear away from a permanent marker, as the ink could soak in and possibly affect the embryo. I don't have proof of this, its just a gut feeling.
