Marking Stray Dogs in our Yards?

If the dog is running loose, they are the ones starting a feud. You could try a pellet gun, but they don't do much good on dogs with a strong prey drive. Maybe the dog could just disappear.

My uncle actually uses paintball guns to mark his cattle....But have YOU ever been hit by one? We have tournaments on weekends on our farm for kicks. However, they can break the skin and are ALWAYS painful. They can also cause internal damages and break ribs on calves if you don't get their shoulder or hip. So if you want to REALLY get the point across to a dog....This is the BEST method. We have shot and killed a coyote with a paintball gun before....Shot him in the ear(was aiming for his neck) and found him not to far away with neon green paint all over his head and INSIDE his ear...Along with blood. But go after our calves and we go after you! Same goes for any animal on the farms. You can actually buy paintball guns at our local Wal-Mart Superstore. I think they run anywhere from $29.99 up to the $100's. We bought our guns from Bass Proshops tho.

Not sure where your located at but check with local laws about shooting/ marking any animal as even a "harmless" shot from a paintball gun can result in animal cruelty charges if someone reports you(I say this cause it was on Animal Cops Detroit on Animal Planet). Just wouldn't want you to get into trouble. If I were you...I would SHOOT AWAY!!! But we don't have ASPCA or animal cops here.

Remember, in most localities, even if it is legal to shoot and kill a dog, it is illegal to injure it. If a paintball, BB or pellet breaks the skin or even bruises a dog, you can be charged with cruelty to animals. If you shoot with the intent to kill, that is usually legal for stray dogs bothering livestock. Yes, it seems stupid, but that's the way it is. If you are hitting dogs with a piantball gun, don't advertise that you did it. It won't be worth it. Just get a real gun and shoot it.

Wow I know here it is legal to shoot any dog harrassing livestock. Didn't think about it possibly being considered cruelity.

Damage done to your victim with a paintball gun depends on range and the pressure of the gun. Point blank will do more damage than ranged, and if you have the pressure turned up on your gun it is going to hurt alot more. I used to go paintballing with my husband and neighbor, I have been hit and it never hurt that much because, just a sting (no skin breaking or welts), but we always keep the pressure done enough to help limit damage. Now if you are talking about wanting to kill the dog with a paintball gun, you need to freeze the paintball. My neighbor wanted to see what would happen if she froze paintballs...those suckers dented her car door and went clear through her trailer's wall!

But ravencreek is right, you want to make sure you arent going to be charged with animal cruelty. You can kill the dog, just not injure it and make it suffer.

My brother used to play and ref for a paintball park in Dallas years back. Usually, the only times he ever had broken skin were when someone had their gun air set to high or they shot from too close.

If you are just interested in marking, I think they may sell pellets that break easier but then you run the risk of having it jam your gun.
