Hi Everyone! New to the site and chicken farmin'! We are a family of 4 just starting our little 5 acre farm with chicks in Harford County! We have 2 barred rock and 5 leghorns. Our 6 year old fell in love with a "chicken little" (barred rock) right off the bat BUT I don't think she's gonna make it. She has a splayed legs or one is broke (gonna band-aid splint it) and hasn't grown at all in 3 weeks. They were all hatched at approx the same time and the others have tripled in size and doing well by poor chicken little hasn't grown. She eats and drinks fine and poo looks good. Time will tell. We prayed for her and we told him God has 3 answers to prayer....yes, no, and wait. We are waiting!

I'm in Pasadena, MD which is in A.A. county. I would love to meet other chicken enthusiasts, and I'd love to check out other people's set ups.

I have new chicks hatching and I'd love to stick some other new chicks under the hens to join the flock. Anyone have extras??

FYI -Anne Arundel county recently changed their requirement to have livestock to needing a minimum of 40,000 sq ft. I was told last May, you could have 1 hen per 1250 sq ft. Here is an article from the MD Gazette:

Family loses case over pet chickens

BROOKLYN PARK - A Roland Terrace family's flock of pet hens must go, a county administrative hearing officer has ruled.

Stephen LeGendre denied a variance requested by Sandy and Andrew Kobus, which would have allowed them to keep their pets despite a county law passed this year that prohibits livestock on land smaller than 40,000 square feet.

The couple bought the hens for their children several years ago for Easter, They plan to appeal the Aug. 12 decision to the Board of Appeals.

When they applied for the variance, the family had five of the birds living behind the house. One has died of old age, Mrs. Kobus said Monday.

"Now it's become a real commitment to keeping them," she said of appealing the board's decision. "If we didn't, I wouldn't feel like I was doing everything I could."

Applying for a variance cost the Kobuses $180, and an appeal will cost them $280. About 40 neighbors have signed a petition promising to chip in money so the family can appeal the ruling.

should clarify, it was May 07 I was told about the 1250 sq ft, it apparently was changed to the 40,000 sq ft in Jan 08

I am new to chickens and live in Howard County. I haven't had much luck finding anyone else with chickens until I found this site. We now have 4 chickens-2 anconas and 2 buff orpingtons. Would love to add two more to our flock. This chicken thing is very addicting!
Does anyone feed organic feed, if so where do you get it?

Hello - I don't currently feed organic but there is an organic chickens yahoo group(OrganicChickens2) you may want to join. What are you looking to add to your flock? I do rescue some hens at times and try to rehome but the only one I have here currently is a 3 yr old Easter Egger and I'm not sure at this point that I want to give her up, depends on how she gets along with my other hens. My other hens are a standard Salmon Faverolle and a bantam Wyandotte. I also have an bantam Easter Egger chick that is 8 weeks old that someone gave me but if it turns out to be a rooster I can't keep it. So far, it appears to be a pullet but I have heard you can't really be sure til it lays an egg or crows.

Thanks, I did join the organic site, but the closest place I have found is in Pa or Va. I was hoping that someone would know a closer place. As far as what I am looking for in chickens is a young brown or colored egg layer or soon to be egg layer. My chickens are 8 months old.
