MARYLAND THREAD!

Pics
Hi there everyone,

My name is Courtney and I'm a reporter with the Frederick News-Post in Frederick County, Md. I'm currently working on a feature we plan to call "Backyard Barnyard," where we talk to people who keep chickens in suburban or even urban areas. I was hoping to chat with any of you who live in Frederick County for the piece. Please let me know if you'd be interested. I look forward to hearing back from you!

I am from Baltimore County, Loch Raven area. I am a new chicken owner and just finished my coop. My girls were hatched Arpil 10th, and are they a handful of laughs. Each day is funnier than the last. Can't wait till they can go into the coop and start laying eggs.

Welcome! I lived in Essex MD for several years. I got to know Loch Raven well. I loved to go there to swim in the creek, catch crawfish, ride horses, and just enjoy the beautiful scenery. It is a beautiful area. :)

Hi all,
I'm on the shore as well out in Caroline county. I'm so glad to see peeps from my area on here. My family (6 kids 24yrs to 8yrs) and I accidentally got chickens and now we are addicted. We happened to be driving along a back road and saw a baby chicken in the road. My son ran all up and down the road and gathered up 5 chicks over 2 days that we searched the area. We started using your site that first day to figure out what to do with chickens. Raised them in the fire place with a heat lamp til they feathered out and then moved them outside. Thanks for the help. Too bad we didn't read more about predators though because those five have since been eaten by something else and we picked up a few from the auction but they are not the friendliest bunch but we love them anyway. Now that we have the protection thing under control we are looking to expand our flock by possibly sticking some fertile eggs of various colors and varieties under one or both of my broody hens.
I only recently joined the site but have been lurking for a few years now. Thanks again for all the great information and the cool pics that helped us plan our coop.

Nice looking coop. Birds will be happy & safe. We live in Kingsville. Right up the road. Welcome

Thanks for the welcome. Like I said earlier, I am new to raising chicks, so I will probably be asking a bunch of stupid questions until I get my feet wet. My wife didn't want birds originally, but she is warming up to the idea after seeing the chicks. I am raising for eggs and meat, these girls are not pets, and I have named them accordingly ( original, crispy, bbq, etc...). I have ordered some supplies to start raising mealworms also, since the girls go nuts whenever I give the worms as treats. I thought sharks were vicious, until I watched that feeding frenzy. Would love to meet some nearby chicken owners, and pick your brains if you are up to it. As you can see from my profile, they will be confined to the pen since all of the neighbors have dogs, and the predators (racoons, fox, hawks) in this neighborhood are plentiful.

Greetings from Southern Maryland, Calvert County. I keep horses and raise Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats. I use their rich and delicious milk to make PeaPeeps Natural Goats Milk Soap. Some friends dropped off a flock of homeless chickens and there ya go--hooked. I am still working on housing for my ever-changing flock. Right now the plan is to put them in the doe pen. They make such a mess in there though, so I am hanging some roosting posts out of the way. Most likely senario: Mu will get her foot stuck, Nilla will jump on it and crack it. The babies will try to climb up to it, and the chickens will ignore it!

Welcome! I used to vacation in Calvert Cliffs (Scientists Cliffs). Are you familiar with that community? I am writing a pictorial book about both Calvert & Dorchester Counties. Here is a sneak preview:
