I use pellets because otherwise my chickens will eat the big bits and knock aside the more fine grains.
So it's just a waste giving them mash or crumbles.

I ferment...

4 1/2 parts starter/grower crumbles
2 1/4 parts rolled oats
2 1/4 parts ground corn
1 part flax seeds (10% max)

Comes out at 16% protein and plenty of energy for cold weather. Fermenting makes for healthy, beautiful birds and a lower feed bill.

I use a three grain scratch mixed with crumble, oyster shell, and egg shells. The also have red wheat that is always available. They will not eat pellets.

I have been using crumbles or starter mix for a long time ,they stopped eating them unless there was nothing else available, they would eat the more expensive little bags for game birds,I had tried some of my neighbors pellets before and they wouldn't eat them either,I purchased a bag of purina omega 3 layena pellets to try, all my chickens love them they are eating them up, the pellets are smaller, I also mixed in a small bag of premium wild bird mix and some rooster booster vitamins, I also feed them cheap .50 canned whole kernel corn, and spaghetti noodles mixed with yogurt , because I couldn't get them to eat yogurt , I've heard they love bread mine won't eat it,but they Love mini marshmallows cut in 1/2. Peaches,tuna....I have some spoiled chickens I may need a second job.

If you were to ferment those feeds you would be shocked at their attitude change about feed time! LOL Also, you won't need to feed them the yogurt if you feed them fermented feed. You could even put some of the yogurt in the fermented feed. I use buttermilk as a quick starter for the ferment.

I use pellets but I ferment them with crimped oats, BOSS, and sometimes split peas. Much less waste with fermented. If I'm not fermenting their feed [sometimes I take a break from it in the hottest part of the summer] I then stay with pellets as they don't knock them out of the feeder as easily as crumbles.

I feed mine all of them as I find different birds like different types I find bantams like crumble or mash and the larger birds tend to like pellets. I normally mixed them all together and leave them overnight to form a wet mash crumble substance that all my birds love

I use a mix that contains concentrated pellets plus a blend of natural grains and seeds, whole and crushed.

The girls love it and in combination with a good feeder a 25kg bag it goes a long way.
