And after he pays you, then I hope he takes the proper precautions to keep it from happening again. I've seen this before, where the person is paid, but the dogs come back. They just never learn sometimes.
I'm so sorry! Why the heck does he have electric fence and NOT have it turned on???
Glad he's gonna compensate you for the birds, but it won't bring them back...
Definitely file a police report, in case he decides that he doesn't need to pay up.
Yes, still do the report and whole deal as if he wasn't paying. He might think the birds are worth 3 bucks each... I spoke with one lady out here who sells her breeder quality silkie roos for 15 a pop.. and that's a roo she doesn't want in her breeding program!
I am so sorry. I'm sitting here thinking how awful it would be to lose my chickens like that ... I think it would be even worse having a dog kill them instead of a raccoon or such. The dogs should have been properly contained, wild animals do what they do to survive.
I'd still file the police report and take pictures, witnesses info, extra. Make notes that he knew the one could jump the fence and that he has electric fences but they were turned off. Date and keep everything! Hopefully he pays up for everything and learns to keep his dogs home but, if he doesn't and you continue to have problems you will have documentation to fall back on.
If I were you, I would charge $30 on the silkies, and $20 on everything else. That is $710 but still in my opinion, not enough. These were your pets that you enjoyed hatching out and spending time with. Include the feed bill. How many bags of feed will 27 25 wk olds eat? They owe you. (If they don't pay you should bring them to court!)
