I live in Iowa and I listen to the Ag news here regularly......lots of talk about growing more soybeans vs corn for a 2nd year in a row, as the prices and demand for beans are better than they are for corn. I've noticed in just the last 6 months that a bag of cracked corn has DOUBLED here! It used to be so cheap, but not anymore. The commercial poultry foods have also gone up about a 1/3 or so in price :/ So, it's not all hype.
I do grow some food for them during the summer, but no way can I grow my own grains for them, as most people can't either. I plan to raise my egg prices at least a dollar a dozen to help pay the feed bill. In the past, egg sales have more than paid for their feed, but probably not this year if I don't up the price a little bit. I do buy when their food is on sale and sign up on the manufacturer websites for coupons and to earn points towards free food, etc. Nutrena has a very good rewards program, fyi
