Massive Rant

There are a lot of things you can do.Most will create a NFH situation. I would call AC to come and get the dogs that attacked me and my livestock. End of story.....for the dogs.

You cause any problems for the neighbors and most will likely turn on you and do the same. Be smart about this. And enjoy your little one!

Maybe call a great Pyr rescue group and explain the problem. A freind of mine is fostering a golden that was caught repeatedly at a nearby farm, the farmers didn't call animal control, so they called a Golden rescue, who came and got her the next time she was on the farm, went and talked to the owners and she was released into their custody. It might not be that simple, but sometimes with purebreds, there are (pretty worthless) contracts signed, saying you wont let them run off.
Good luck with this and enjoy your baby!!

How will you feel if you release your dog and they kill it or severely injure it?

Call the Police and report it, then just shoot the dogs and be done with it.

Pellet guns, BB guns, paintball guns and pepper spray are not going to make much difference, and you'll still end up losing birds.

The owners obviously can't or won't control them since it's happened 3 times already.

Catching them and taking them to a shelter is NOT a good idea, and could be considered stealing , which is a Felony here.

You would also be taking the risk of being bitten.

Sometimes you just have to do what NEEDS to be done, and not let emotions cloud your judgement

Good point - I guess I didn't think that one through too well.

At the point you are, the owner has been given repeated chances, they are friendly pups, next time they show up I'd just remove their collars, transport them to a distant shelter or otherwise find them more responsible new homes. And say nothing more to the woman....if she shows up, you don't have a clue.

I wouldn't worry about the 'stealing' part....it would be pretty hard for an owner to bring or press a theft charge under those circumstances. I've done it, know many do it...such irresponsible owners usually don't care enough about them to go to the trouble of trying to take legal action, and again, going to have a hard time making their case given the history.

You pepper spray a dog in the face and I will guarntee you that you will never see that dog on your property again, unless its just a really stupid dog:eek:

I'm a retired letter carrier. You pepper spray a dog and all it does is learn to avoid the pepper spray. You will still see that dog again, it just won't get close enough to let you spray it the next time.

Call a rescue or animal control.

Some people shouldn't own pyrs. They are livestock guardians (i know, I know, they chase your chickens, so they weren't raised to protect chickens)

Pyrs NEED fencing. Period. If given 5 acres, they want 50. If given 50 they want 500. I don't know if those dogs have jobs (do they guard livestock?) but they need jobs AND fencing. I have 2. They protect my chickens and turkeys, but don't let a single other bird land on our property - from hawks and owls to starlings and pigeons. They don't know the difference. But you shouldn't own a pyr if you don't fence them in! And they don't come when called if they think they are working. Heck, I hope my dogs would ignore me if they were fighting with a coyote! Mine do generally come when called, UNLESS they think they see a threat.

I'm getting off point. The owner of those dogs needs to be more responsible. And ANYONE in their right mind that thinks an un-fenced Pyr is going to learn to stay on their property when unattended is fooling themselves. You can train some dogs that way, but Pyrs are guardian dogs and they want to patrol what they think is "their" territory, and if they aren't fenced in or fenced out, then they think it is THEIR territory!

There must be laws in your area about dogs that are on the loose. Call and report them. Maybe go talk to them NOT during an incident and explain what is happening. Maybe they just don't get it, or realize that it is a big deal. Also, I don't know what type of dog you have, but a pair of Pyrs can tear a coyote in two, so don't send your dog out if you think these pyrs might treat it as a threat and attack. That doens't help anyone to have a bunch of injured dogs.

Keep a lot of all the times the dogs are in your yard, and consider some temperary fencing around your chicken coop area to protect them until the neighbors solve the problem. But those folks need to know that Pyrs need fencing and a job, or they will look to run loose. And they can cover a lot of ground, so they might not JUST be bothering you!

Cassidy22....honestly, there are a lot of people that shouldn't own animals at all! Or even have kids, for that matter.! I wouldn't feel "guilty" at all about "stealing" those Pyr pups under this circumstances! and I'm really a very honest and ethical person! I'd feel much better about making them just dissapear than about shooting the or harming them in any way.

dont know about where you are, but we have had problems with stray dogs and a neighbors dogs before and there is no humane society or shelter here- they wont even let me take in the droped off puppies becouse i am out of thier city limits! ( and we have no county ac) so we called the sheriff and he told us to shoot them. if they are attacking or HARRASSING livestock. we have the right to shoot them.

so... do i like that fact... no. will i protect what is mine....heck yah.

honistly i would call your sheriff and find out what he says and than have him go to the neighbor and repeat what he tells you. also that they will be liable to pay for what the dogs destroy. weather it is chickens or fencing. might be that is all it takes for them to see the problem and contain the dogs. becouse i gaurentee that it wont be long till they are in your yard with a bunch of dead chickens. and did i read something about a goat pen?? if you have goats and this continues that will be their next target! these are big strong dogs and they have a strong instinct, and without a way to properly direct that instinct thay are a loose cannon!

also, look for a great pyr rescue and call them and explain the situation. most rescues (if they are close enuff) will be willing to come and speek with the dog owner and try to help or rehome the pups. if they cant come give the neighbor a note with the # for the rescue.

LOL, the stinky thing is an awesome idea, to bad they dont sell skunk in a can!

Actually, there is a skunk scent deer hunters use sometimes to mask their scent. Maybe you could buy some, put in some sort of spray bottle!? That is a great, and funny idea!

Actually, I think you can get skunk stink in a bottle. I believe something like that is sold for deer hunters to mask their human scent. That would be funny & probably effective!
