Math skills are important when raising chickens...

Adding to this thread because I thought it was hilarious.

My husband wanted chickens. I told him "OK, but not too many- maybe 2-3."

I started reading about chickens & decided I wanted a variety of chickens & a variety of eggs. Decided we should get 4-6 for variety.

After much deliberation, decided to get 2 each of 4 breeds: Speckled Sussex, Welsummers, Easter Eggers, and Barred Rocks; for a total of 8.

Went to the feed store. Was told there is a 5 chick minimum on special orders. Ordered 5 each of the Speckled Sussex & Welsummers, since I had seen the others previously at feed stores & figured I could get them later. They did tell me they could try to sell the extras if I didn't want all 10.

My order arrived: 6 Speckled Sussex & 2 Welsummer. I did not try to leave any behind.
I was now at my most recent maximum planned number (8), but did I stop? Of course not!

Went to the feed store for food & bought 2 Easter Eggers. Now at 10 chicks.

Lost 1 Welsummer to pasty-butt or something similar. Now at 9 chicks.

Saw a picture of cream Branbanters & decided I had to have some. Found that Ideal sells them, but they were listed as out of stock for the year. Figured I would add to my flock next year.

Ideal emailed me that they still had a few Cream Brabanters hatching- I ordered 5. Told me they would be willing to ship a minimum of 12-15 chicks. I did not want "packing peanuts" so I added another EE, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Brahmas (not on my original list at all) & 5 more Welsummers to my order. (they said 12-15, I figured why not 16, right?)

Lost 2 Speckled Sussex out of a 6 foot tall open-at-the-top run (figure maybe a bird or a cat- they are back in the garage full-time until we reinforce it). Now at 7 chicks.

Order from Ideal arrives- all 16 chicks healthy & happy. Now at 23 chicks.

City limit is 15 chickens. Going to try to give away a couple to get myself back down under 20, which seems close enough to 15, & only about 10 times more than I originally expected to have just a few short weeks ago.

I lost 4 of my babies this week due to my own stupidity, 3 Black Copper Marans and 1 Gold Laced Polish. Well I had to get some more BCM because I was only left with two. I found some more chicks and I went to buy them Friday, I asked for 5 and he gave me 6 but only charged me for 4 woo hoo. I also got a dozen hatching eggs from him that I set in the bator today. Also Friday, I wanted to replace my GLP so I bought 3 more day old chicks and two ducks for my daughters. Then this morning, I went to a swap meet looking for more eggs to hatch and there was a guy there wanting to sell his GLP flock....5 hens and 1 roo (that is GORGEOUS). He wanted $10 each or all of them for $30. I told him all I had was $15 (I only went to buy eggs) and I did not bring anything to put them in IF I had bought them. Well the lady I purchased my bator from was there and I got 6 eggs from her (for free). I told her I was getting ready to leave and started walking to my truck. I heard her call my name so I turned around and headed back towards her. She came running up to me and said the guy would take $15 for ALL the flock and she would loan me a cage to bring them home in. I think I got a good deal

So now this brings me to the following totals:

9 Gold Laced Polish
3 Silver Laced Polish
1 Blue Polish
8 Cinnamon Queens
5 EE's
8 Black Copper Marans
18 eggs in the bator
1 Welsh Harlequin duck
1 Khaki Campbell duck

And to think, I only wanted 8 chickens for the eggs lol

It seems like the number of coops/runs are multiplying just like the birds. I'm now working on my 3rd coop/run for my RIR's and then all I will have left is a couple of breeder pens, or so I thought. The DW informed me yesterday that the Buff Silkies that she wants will need housing also. I'm just gonna close my eyes when she starts her version of chicken math. I will not dare tell her that 2 silkies equals one chicken according to some folks here.
