Math skills are important when raising chickens...

Lets see I had 1359 chickens last year, 13 died, hatched out 468 more 2 months ago, then this month I hatched out 153 more.

That equals *drum roll*...................1967.......................can you say........... WOW?

I think that really does make you "overrun with chickens!"

Whew, I thought I was out of control

Had 13 hens and 3 roosters, now 13 hens, ???? peeps. My coops not quite done and I'm thinking is already too small (8x12) plus a run. Having a rooster roundup this weekend, and ending up with only one.... REALLY.

THIS IS TERRIFIC! I feel wonderful! Thanks guys. My Hubby grumps a little, as long as they don't tear up his garden, he's ok with it. But I do need to get some of those roos gone.

Thanks again. This thread is fabulous!

oh oh...I think the lack of math skills is passed down from generation to generation....UPDATE: My 12 yr old son the duck raiser didnt see any mallards he thought were good enough at feed store, so, he went online to Holderreads.

I got the call last night that his TEN pencilled runners and saxonys (all exhibition quality because as he reasoned, might as well...) are coming in a couple of weeks, bringing his count up to 14. Dad said he could have 6. Cant sell his Rouens yet cause they are entered in the fair as his 4H project....

Now my 15 yr old daughter is afflicted as well! A nice lady gave me a Welsummer pullet. When I went to pick her up, she also had her BFF in the cage with her, a black Americauna pullet. My daughter had to have her. (it matches her balck Cochins)

Ok, its growing......2 chicks died yesterday, so the 3 of us are telling Dad that we need more to replace them. His saying that the hatchery sent us 3 partridge cochins and and Australorp for free is falling on deaf ears. Funny, he wanted the meat chickens, we vetoed that until later.....

I think I've got the same affliction, but I'm in the early stages.

I wanted to get four hens for laying/pets. We got four white leghorn chicks for the kids for Easter. One died, and two are turning out to be roosters. I decided I wanted to get something that laid brown eggs, and a couple americauna/ee. I went to buy more feed, and somehow ended up with four EE and one SLW (min chick order of 5). I also want to get a Copper Marans, so I'm currently double my original "goal" before even getting the Marans. Of course, the two roos are eventually going to Freezer Camp, but they're not big enough yet.

Since reading around here, I've decided that next year I will try to hatch a couple chicks.

I'm so glad my dh is patient.

I've wanted to get chickens again for some time. We moved to a home where I could allow my chicken hobbies to take off. Went to TSC and got 8. Lost one 5 are to share dumpling soon. All roosters. So I ordered a few from ideal. 24 BOs got 28. Wife decided to get a few ducks. 6 later 2 drakes the rest hens. Did I mention Izzy? She is a BBW turkey. Never to grace our table. Wife said she is way to sweet. I can see how this can get out of hand.

I've done a bit of chicken math myself since February of this year. Before that, I didn't have a single chicken as we used to live on a military base.

Hubby told me no more than 6, as that would be plenty for our family. Well, my friend who lives right down the road wanted to co-coop and since I have 10 acres, I figured, why not. So she got six.

After that, I found someone who was giving away EE roos that were 26 weeks old. Just had to have one! So I came home with 2!

Then I found an ad for 2 breeding pairs of Black-Tailed White Japanese Bantams. They were so cute, I couldn't resist...so there is 4 more chickens.

Later down the road, I found someone who was thinning out her 2 year old Barred Rock flock....just had to have one of those!

Then my friend and I decided that we wanted to add some more color to this flock so we purchased some EE chicks, BO chicks, and a BR chick. So now we have 8 more.

I then found an ad for BBS Silkie chicks, so I had every intention of getting just one. She had 3 left, so they all came home with me.

In the process of all of this running around, my BR went broody on 12 eggs (due June 4th) and my Bantams have gone broody on 15 (due June 12th). Plus, I am getting a surprise shipment of turkeys, ducks, guineas and chicks around my birthday the middle of June.

So, if you add all of that up, and the maximum guesstimate for my surprise shipment, I will have a total of 100 birds!

I'm just a bit addicted.
