When we started out....hubby said NO MORE than 3!!! Then the neighbor wanted some...so we said ok well have 6 all together...RESEARCH HELPS~ me to hubby " we need at least one hen per person ideally 2 per person...to have the eggs we want!! So we bought 12 LOL 6 for us and 6 for neighbors...

Well, one is a rooster! So we got TWO to replace that ONE and shhhhhhhhh don't tell...I got an americauna!!!
smack.gif
that is what my hubby is gonna do!! BUT I wanted a colored egg in the bunch!!! PRAYING for green or blue eggs and NOT brown!!! Man, if I could I would have some speckled sussex, cochins, polish, gold laced wynadottes and lots of others!!! Oh, to have more land...we live in a neighborhood with only .17 acres!! We have a 16 foot by 12 foot run in the process...only an 8 by 4 coop, but we live in FL...they won't be in the coop except to roost and lay...now I have to add another nestbox!!!

I got 2 more!! LOL Well I went this morning to replace the americauna, she is the smallest in the bunch and getting picked on...well instead I got 2 more from her flock to keep her company!

So our 3 has ended up at......16

Love this thread! Good to know I'm not alone.....I started with a 'package' deal of 6 pullets and a roo - all hatchery BO. Didn't take me long to get bored with all the same color (!) so got a couple more of different colors. Lost a few to neighbor dogs. BO roo went to freezer camp, one of the chicks I got turned out to be a good-looking BLRW roo (currently my keeper roo). Early this spring (it was still winter here) got hatching fever, bought bator and about 5 shipments of eggs (too close together as it turns out). Some did really well, some not so much. Sold a bunch here and there. Got local BLRW eggs (2 doz, 'cause 1 doz was just not 'enough'!) and had almost 100% hatch! Bought 4 broodie hens. Hatched out a bunch (notice I am not specifying exactly how many - can't keep track!) - bless fuzzy math - of my 'own' chicks. It has been CRAZY!!!

I now have: 1 roo + 4 BO hens + 1 Golden Buff + 1 Partridge Cochin + 1 Blue Splash Cochin + 1 SLW + 12 5-to-8 wk McM chicks of various breeds + 7 4 wk old chicks, mostly BLRW + 13 week-old chicks under Splash broodie + 5 week-old chicks I am holding for a lady (hope she comes gets them) + about 20 (haven't really counted) BCM chicks I am keeping for a friend for a few weeks (does that count?) + 5 brand new Pendecensa chicks said friend gave me = 71 currently! How does this happen?

And I want to KEEP most of what I have! I also love that other thread of the 'getto' chicken coops/runs, because I fit right in there also!

Then 3 of my Cornish Xs and one of my RIRs don't count?

I would add a corollary that those you are planning to eat don't count either!

28=18. Now I can get some more!

OK!!! You all don't have Math Skill Deficiencies. You have IMPULSE CONTROL DEFICIENCIES!! Do not, I repeat, do not (ANY of you) get TWO rabbits!!!

I just found out my DH ordered more coming 6/16! Cochins and Brahmas (spelling?)!!! like 10 or 15!!!!!

We already have 16......I'm going to have to thin the flock...I don't wanna!

Downsizing is easy the way I do it. I re-homed 30 grown/almost grown birds to a good friend and got 50 chicks. It's like I explained to the DW, the chicks are smaller than the older birds...thus downsized. Doing it this way you can get as many chicks as you would like. I mean, they are smaller. I love chicken math...

Last year when I started out I only planned for 6 which turned to 11 and now I have 9 more on the way (6/7/10). I cannot keep anymore than that without expanding again!
