Math skills are important when raising chickens...

Yep... Placed an order for 3, ended up being 5. Ordered 5 more to come week of June 14th. So thats 10. Saw some bantams, and I couldn't resist! The limit was 6, so naturally I got 10. So that brings me to 20. Got 6 more bantams a week later. 26!

Then we got 2 adult Serama's, and 3 babies! 31! I'm 10x what I orginally wanted- in just a few months! Oh wait, I lied.. 32- I forgot we hatched a little silkie last week! We also have 6 Serama eggs in the bator!! I had actually gotten so many banties to make up for the fact I'd have to re-home 1/2 if they were roo's! As it's looking.. out of the 20 chicks in brooders right now about 6 are really looking Roo-ish. The others, not so much!

Law in this city is 3 hens. Had 2 hens, went to get a chick, and the store had a minimum of 4. Split it with my sister, took home 2 chicks= 4 total. Went back to the feed store 2 weeks later and had to bring home the little EE chick (I convinced them I was just adding to the last order, so they gave me one). =5. Drew up plans for a new coop, starting it this week. Mentioned to the hubby yesterday that the coop will hold 9

He wasn't amused.

So we went from 2 to 5, became outlaws and I still have room for more

I ordered 4 chicks. On pick up day, I came home with 8. I couldn't remember for the life of me (middle age, you know) how many birds the coop that I ordered would hold. Alas, I found my note - 10! Neighbor gave me 2 silkie bantam chicks so the coop is full for now!

The Plan: 10-12 laying hens, and a Black Cochin for my daughter, my hatchery order is coming in this sunday. I made the mistake of ordering in March, so that gave me 2 months or more to add chickens, order is now up to 36. Well, I have to get several of each breed so I can keep the best, right?
Then I saw an ad for Cuckoo Marans ready to lay pullets in my area, stopped to get 2 of those (remember, the plan is for layers)on the way to a feed store over an hour away to "see what they have" and ended up with 2 BR, and 2 RIR chicks (2 of the very few breeds I didnt order) and oh there are the 5 BCM chicks I had to have....and this morning at the feed store I was told there is a new chick order coming in tomorrow morning and there will be silkies.....there are also Mallards feathered out.....
Did I mention my son has 4 ducks too? Well, that lady at the feed store is an enabler so its not my fault! We are also getting 20 meaties next month to raise for 4H.....(dont see how they really count though, theyll be butchered soon) so heres my math:

36 + 4+2+4+5+whatever my son and I cant leave at the feed store tomorrow +20 =12. Chicken math, not to be confuse with Chick Math, what my DH calls it when I buy something at a huge discount and rationalize that the money I would have spent is now extra......

btw, if this thread doesnt scare people away, nothing will.

this post!!! In 2 1/2 months time I ordered 15 Silver Sebright and 5 White Faced Black Spanish chicks from Cackle. In the waiting period I bought an OEGB crele pair from a local breeder. The fever began to slowly creep up- I went back and bought a self blue OEGB pair from the breeder. My chicks came. Lost one WFBS and one sebright but they sent extras so that makes 22 chicks and 4 adults. THEN I discovered you can buy hatching eggs on ebay.....
got 3 Belgian D'uccles out of my first incubation try. Went egg crazy- 13 more of shipped eggs and some of my OEGB eggs hatched today. Had two more adult birds shipped to me yesterday. 3 more adults coming tomorrow. 18 eggs in the bator..... My math IS fuzzy....fuzzybutts!

22 + 6 + 3 + 3 + 13 = 47 plus whatever the bator hatches (up to 18!)
