Math skills are important when raising chickens...

Year 1: Supposed to order 4. Ordered 6. Got a peanut. 7 total
Year 2: Got a bator. Swapped some birds. 15 birds total by winter (as many as 50 off and on til then)
Year 3: Got a 2nd bator. In and out with more birds. Managed to get back to 17 birds for the winter.

Now is year 4: 16 adult birds. 7 are setting on eggs. One is raising chicks. 15 'teenagers' and 6 brooder birds. Goal is to get back down to 20 by winter

I bought my first chicks last week. Went to get 4, got 8 instead. I don't even have a coop yet, they are still in my dining room. Based on absolute hunches I think I have 3 Roosters. Already anticipating that 5 hens isn't enough for the egg consumption in this house. I already want more. It's only been a week! My boyfriend has taken to calling me the "Chicken Whisperer" because they already follow me all over. I have chicken poop on my kitchen floor every day because I can't NOT let them out to play. All I do is peruse this site and try to make guesses on the sex/breed of my chicks! Help! I'm going to turn into a Crazy Chicken Lady! ;-)

I started with 9 last year

4 killed by bear

added 2 in the fall

1 turned out to be a rooster = -1

then some how, 6 laying hens turned into somewhere upwards of 30 chicks and pullets so far this spring

PLUS, we are going to chickenstock this weekend and getting AT LEAST 5 more

Soooo, 6 turned into 40 or so. I see how it works!!!

Current layers over the age of 3 = 13 (not all are laying of course)
Current roosters over the age of 3 = 2 (1 LF 1 Bantam)
Feed store purchase 1 = 16
Feed store purchase 2 = 10
Lost = 2
Mail Order received = 11
Lost = 11
Mail Order received = 12
Feed store purchase 3 = 6
Lost = 1

Went from 15 to 56.. unknown number of roos at this point..

Can't convince Hubby that the old hens would be good eatin (he thinks they'll be tough and stringy)

Oh and the Geese, chicken math applies there too--

Have 12 geese, 1 has 2 goslings, 1 has 3 goslings, had to buy 5 goslings on feed store trip 3, lost 1 gosling, so currently have 12 geese 9 goslings and 1 goose who I plan to kick off her nest this weekend if she doesn't hatch soon, another one who wants to sit, but just can't seem to stay on her nest... hmmm.....

I wanted 20 chikens. I ordered 12 eggs to hatch. got 18. I ordered 17 chicks and got 20. I ordered 6 eggs and got 16. DMIL wanted 6 gave away 12. and lost 1 to an accident. So now 20= 41

SO ........ (12=18) + (17=20) + (6=16) - (6=12) - 1 = 41

See...... Chicken math is easy!!!!
