mating ratio

I am really sorry, I didn't know I had to give my resume to say what I do. I am not into bragging about my accomplishments but I am not a rookie.

Right now we are under snow. I set up breeding pens in the spring. By setting up, I do not mean that I put them up and down. I don't keep my turkeys in the breeding pens year around. They need more cover than the breeding pens provide in the winter. I do not like taking pictures, so don't ask. I am not going out in the snow to take another one. I also will not give my web site out do to privacy.

What did I say to get such a hostile response?

Well excuse me for trying to be friendly. A private web site?

That's a new one.

Sounds like this isn't the thread for you. I hope your day gets better.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I was not responding to your post.

I am sorry you do not understand wanting privacy. My website is for customers. BYC people are not my customers. Mine has my phone number and addresses. I have reason that I do not want BYC people to have that.

I like this doorway. Would like to see photos of your coops. But let it warm up. I enjoy taking photos, but use my cell phone.

I know some who don't like to brag, but have more than 100 APA exhibition points. (Not with Turkeys). I know several folks that have years of experience, but know very little. I will admit that I am no expert, though I have over 30 years of poultry raising experience, in almost all species. We all can learn more. BYC is supposed to a place for a community to learn from each other. I can understand the need for privacy. But please do share what you feel safe to share.

He doesn't like to take photos, so don't ask. I already got chewed out for asking about photos.

SO much to learn about Turkeys..
I counted my birds this weekend while snowed in..
Blue Slates... 12 for sure hens, 4 toms and 1 that I thought was a tom but starting to look more like a hen and I have yet to hear it gobble buut I have seen it fan out like a the three I know are Toms.

I had 5 females last year and 1 tom and raised a few off of them but also had some I purchased as polts.. They are all mixed in together..

Not good. I only know of the One Tom for sure that I had last year and 1 of the Hens I raised because it is solid black.

We are only raising them to eat so hopefully it is not going to be a problem. I have 2 'breeding' pens I was going to put 6 hens to 1 tom and keep the rest of my toms in a seperate pen just in case.
Alabama heat can be rough on them.

I have one extre bourbon Red tom that I raised and i have no idea what to do with him.. I had 3 pair but sold them to keep just the slates and he was the only one that made it.
We had a bad year with turkeys but are going to fix new brooders and then a new big pen this year.. after we get the waterfowl taken care of.

Wish we lived closer, I would buy it from you. I may need to change out my Bourbon Red Tom. Waiting on Steve (the turkey expert) to suggest what to do (breeding method thread that you started Steve).

He is all along. I thought about leaving him in with the slates but I don't know what that would do.. we have no intentions on selling them to anyone for breeding only for us to eat or for someone we know who wants turkey to eat. They by far have been the hardest bird we have to raise and keep alive.

Moveifanz -- I don't think anyone wants a resume. I think there's just some reasonable doubt as to the veracity of your statements, that's all. In this thread, for instance, you talk about your breeding pens like they're a long standing part of your operations, you have established protocols, etc but just as recently as last autumn you were asking very simple breeding questions like how many hens can be serviced by one tom. There may be an explanation for what seems, on this side of the screen, to be some inconsistencies, but if you're unwilling to set that straight...

It makes sense that people might be skeptical. KWIM?

If you're just going to be eating the offspring, I wouldn't worry too much about the one extra tom. Of course, if you have no intention of adding BRs as a breed in the future you could just as easily just eat that one tom now and be done with it, too. That way if someone does end up wanting to buy poults from you for things other than eating you can know for sure you're giving them purebreds, too.
