May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Has anyone had a chick with an umbilical cord still attached to the shell? One of our chicks that hatched this morning is walking around the incubator and is dragging half of it's shell with it because the umbilical cord is still attached to the shell and the chick. Any advice on what to do?

If it looks clear you can pinch it with some tweezers and snip the side closest to the egg, this is to prevent bleeding. If it's still red with lots of blood you can actually break the shell apart so it's not dragging anything but a little membrane until it's absorbed more. Most of the time pinching and snipping works well though. Any little bit that is remaining will dry up and fall off naturally.

Hey everybody! I hope you guys don't mind me joining. I don't have any chickens, (they aren't allowed where I live) so I got as close to chickens as I could... Quail! I have Northern Bobwhites and Texas A&Ms. My bobwhites just recently started laying eggs and I thought I would try to incubate some. I am starting incubation either tomorrow or the day after that and I am incubating as many eggs as I get during that time. (so far I have 14) It's gonna be a while before any chicks hatch, but I'll keep you guys posted!

(Here's the eggs so far...)

Welcome! I love quail hatches! They're so tiny and cute!

Thank you! It was red this morning but now clear. Just snipped and no blood. Thank you!

Having a system down where you can have sold everything you hatch.
Yeah I honestly would keep everything, but there is a need for chickens, ducks, quail, and other birds for meat right now. No need for me to be greedy. If I didn't sell them I would get arthritis from butchering so many of the males.

I really like meeting the new chicken owners and helping them out with a new flock. I want to continue selling even after this virus is gone... Hoping I can make it a hobby that I can enjoy for years to come.

Well, just set 14 Bielefelders!

I put them in my Hova-Bator for now, but when the ones in the Brinsea hatch I’ll put them in the Brinsea.(I know the temps low, just started the bator) So now I have at least 50 eggs in the incubators! :D

There I sat early this morning sipping my coffee after checking the humidity and temperature on my beautiful mixed egg hatch (EE’s, OE’s, Ameraucana’s & Black Copper Marans). And...click...the power goes off!!! I looked over at my husband and said...MY EGGS!!!! My husband called to report it while I grabbed a thick towel to wrap the incubator in! 1.5 hours later it comes back on (a tree was to blame). The eggs got down to 90 degrees. When I candled on day 7 all we’re developing. Today is day 15...hopefully no damage was done by the power outage!
Your bunch looks like mine will be fun to see how our hatches compare
