Have any of you had a black copper maran rooster?

I am honestly thinking about keeping one. There’s a lot of potential with colored egg layers and crossing with a maran

They're beautiful roosters and great protectors! Plus, you can hatch F1 Olive Eggers and Marans in the same flock!

When they come from Texas... tell me how they do. Texas is the worse state to get eggs from.

No idea... most who get them from there they’re damaged. It’s not the breeders, it’s the delivery service there... my friend always gets busted boxes she lives in El Paso

@FortCluck how old were the Deathlayers? Don’t they all go through a phase where they’re working it out and learning how? Jack is the sweetest boy ever but he can be a bit rough sometimes just cause he’s hormonal and has no clue what he’s doing LOL but I’m giving him a chance cause he’s the best and I know he’ll work it out. most chickens do I think. Just takes like a year or two to get over the hormonal teenage phase haha but maybe some don’t. Idk.

Some definitely do not. Definitely. When you finally give up and harvest them, you will see that they have way-oversized family jewels. Not their fault, but still... An hour in the pressure cooker and some cream of mushroom soup does wonders for that bad boy attitude.

What I did, was put it back in the bottom part of it's egg. Put the egg-chick combo in a paper towel lined solo cup. Let it have some time to cleanly absorb. Unless is is already dirty, then then let it do it's own thing. It will not absorb so don't cup it. It should dry up and fall off in a few days.

This looks like a mid sized hernia, if the navel mostly sealed it won't finish absorbing but it's worth waiting a bit to see if it will hopefully absorb some more. It can happen from heat being too high during incubation so if you don't already use one I would get a secondary thermometer for future hatches.

As long as the intestines aren't protruding chicks can survive this. After giving it some time to hopefully absorb more, just be extra careful to keep the brooder clean and I personally use chlorhexidine gently dab it on the navel area at least once a day to help prevent infection.

I had my five wheaten Ameraucanas hatch, one Cochin-silkie cross and two pure Cochins.

Had two more eggs left in the incubator, but the people I bought some BCM hatching eggs off of gave me week old eggs so I slipped the last two under my broody silkie - my "second incubator" - in the coop in order to set the BCMs as soon as possible after cleaning the incubator. One of the two remaining cochin eggs was tapping on the shell and should pip shortly, while the other I couldn't see movement in so I opened it up a bit to check. After moistening the membrane, I saw veins and a bit of movement. Clearly quite a bit behind the rest. I also put a thin plastic covering over it with some tiny air holes poked into it to protect the chick from the hen's feet and retain some moisture in there. I'm watching it closely to see if it will make it - not sure if it's weak or if there is something amiss, but I'll watch it closely.

How I wish I had a good second incubator right now! Will update with results

I do have a thermometer it’s one built into an egg and calibrated. Before I was disabled I was a scientist by trade so everything I have has backups. It’s not always the best but I’m working on upgrades.

chick is in its egg now in a cup I’ll check on it again in a little while. I’m really hoping my kids didn’t try to help it out of its shell when we were at the store
