May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I'm also surprised that there isn't more meat on the JG crosses! Are they typically used for meat in the pure form?
They can be used for meat and the pure form, but you have to wait a very long time. The first year of a Jersey giant's life is more about their bone structure and then the second year is more about putting on meat. You have to wait a very long time for a pure Jersey giant to put on enough meat.

I'm so surprised to hear that JG was less than an EE! Ive been wanting to get JG just to see how they do in meat... Currently I have a Brahma Roo, a RIR hybrid roo, and I believe a freedom ranger roo. Man that freedom ranger is heavy with massive legs and breast! I have 3 of his sons with me still, almost 4 months old and they're massive boys. I don't hear much about people using freedom rangers, but man I'm impressed by how fast his kids grew and packed on weight. I have pics of you're interested.
I'm hoping the Deathlayers I'm getting will cross good with the hens that I have to make a good dual purpose chickens.

I've got eggs in the turner to set on Monday, which will put them for a May 4th hatch day. I told myself I was taking May off, but Mom told me I would be stupid as there is a demand and people contacting me to see if I have more chicks yet.

I broke my cardinal rule with lasts months hatch. I normally don't sell chicks until they are fully feathered out and no longer needing heat, but I gave in because of demand.

I haven't even tried to sell mine yet. I'm being greedy I guess, but we can use them on our farm for either meat or eggs.

While I have lurked here for a while now, I finally created an account today! I'm excited to participate, there are so many knowledgeable chicken tenders here and pretty birds.

I just put a dozen eggs in a shiny new incubator today, after fiddling with it for a few days, so hatch date should be around. The 30th/1st. My ladies are just barnyard layer stock, black and gold sex links - I have two roos, the elder was *supposed* to be a black sex link pullet (ha!) and the younger is his offspring from a clutch my bigger goldie hen hatched out last fall.

This will be my first attempt at doing a full incubation myself! On last fall's hatch, when I went to dispose of the duds a day or two after she'd left with her 5 new babies - I heard peeping from one egg. I ended up taking the eggs into the house, rigged up a heat lamp and hatched out seven more babies over the course of the week!

Welcome to BYC and to the hatch-a-long! I hope you have a great hatch!

That's incredible that you were able to hatch so many under the heat lamp!

Thank you! I am surprised myself, after all the research I've done and how the particular the conditions need to be. It may have helped that we are in a fairly wet climate and don't have forced air in our house. I honestly just expected the peeping one to hatch, but by the time it had hatched I heard another peeping, and that routine continued on and on until there were seven.

That is amazing!
