May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

That's awesome. I can't wait to hatch different mixes. Squatch went to his new home. We got KFC for dinner because we are lazy today 😂
Oh, man, I haven't had KFC in years! Some how I always live somewhere that doesnt have one lol. It sounds so good right now.

Our mixes are so fun! I think they are more addicting to hatch than pure breeds because you never know what will pop out!

Yesterday I gave in and allowed a Naragansett hen to take over the day's collection of turkey eggs. She usually has a Bourbon Red friend in with her. I put a poor cold Black in the coop after bereaving her of the fake egg she was sitting under a mostly-fallen tree. Hopefully she'll climb up in the nesting box with them and be content. It will be full then. I gave them around a dozen, I guess. I dated them but forgot to count.

Also, same day, I left the goose egg in the nest. Last time I checked, they had two. Likely three by now. There are three geese and a gander. I have eleven of their eggs (all developing!) in an incubator, so we'll see how the mamas do caring for a clutch of their own. I can only eat so many eggs! In the other incubator are ducks--eight Anconas and nine mixes, shipped off ebay. I started out with two dozen, so not too bad. They're all looking lively thus far!

Here is the list, more for my reference than anything:

Ducks: Set 3/27, due 4/24
Geese: Set 4/5, due 5/4
Broody Turkeys: Set 4/10, due 5/8
Broody Geese: Collecting 4/10 (27-28 days)

None of my chicken hens are broody. 🤷🏼‍♀️ And my one healthy cock (a Buckeye)--not sure he's into the whole "father-of-nations" thing. He's aggressive toward other males and to me, but I've never seen him breed a hen. He's gonna end up in a pie, but not until I can replace him. Who knows? Maybe he's doing his job. I may coop him up with the Buckeye gals and see whether he can make babies.

I guess it's not a big problem. I have some "teenagers" in a tractor--about half grown, with two functional roos (when they grow up) and five capons (oops)

Plus there are fifteen babies (11 Brahma & 4 Silkies) in the brooder. I have lots of chickens. I just don't have a full "chicken kit" like I want to have. :he :lau

Yes! We are butchering some this week. They're only 12 weeks.
I HAVE to do some more turkeys. They're costing a fortune in food and all ragged from scrapping with one another. I got a meat grinder attachment for the mixer. (It actually had some good reviews on YouTube.) Ground turkey here I come!
