May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I'm so excited I get to join the May hatch along. Earlier today I picked up 9 lavender (self-blue) ameraucana bantam hatching eggs, and I'm super excited about those, I'm going to be a nervous wreck for 3 weeks waiting on them to develop/hatch!

I went ahead and set my wandering black East Indi eggs this morning. I let them rest for nearly 24 hours. When I looked at them it looks like I have some pretty messed up air cells. I set them up in the incubator that is sitting up straight at least for a few days. I am hoping that the air cells will stabilize a bit more.

Set 14 eggs on 4/14; candled them tonight (had 1 with a bloodline and 6 others that were clear or early quitters) so down to 7 of which 3 were showing lots of movement, the other 4 we are watching and unsure. 10 more days to go.

All 7 Narragansetts are developing Day 5 I believe.

Finally found a guinea nest and stole an egg to put in the bator. Little turds have been hiding it! Should I let them hatch some

So curious what breeds are coming in next week!

I've got to stop leaving an empty incubator next to a full one. Since my hatches have been a bit off, it was just supposed to be a back up plan, but now it's got another 9 eggs in it on day five. And 16 out of 18 have actually made it through to day 16 now for the first of May hatch. My chicken math is really bad.

I actually lost one of my original hens this week, due to sickness or old age, not sure what she had. I will be selling one or two of the pure light Sussex cockerels, when I have decided which ones I want to keep. And the two chicks in the brooder are to 90% a pullet and cockerel, so he'll be raised for meat. So there my chicken math is sorted until I see what and how many chicks hatch...

I used to have guineas and never could find their nests until it was too late. One day a guinea brought out just 2 babies. Later I read on BYC that guinea hens tend to abandon their nest after just 1 or 2 hatch. So keep an eye on the nest....

I have a friend who is incubating my eggs for me but won't candle the eggs till the 1st or 4th of MAY so won't know how many are viable or dead til then.

I candled last night only 4 had development in them I know they say don't count your chickens before they hatch but I really was hoping for a couple more especially considering its only day 7 so I might have nothing by the time they are due to hatch

I candled last night. Not really much left to see at this point, with the shells being so full. I'm going to pop out today for chick crumble, work on getting my brooder set back up and prepare for LOCKDOWN tomorrow afternoon. Hurray!
