May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

So today is day 17 for my turkeys. And I have an air sac question. There’s one egg who’s air sac has grown significantly more than the rest. Baby is moving just fine in the egg, should I worry? They have about 10 days left. Last week it’s air sac was the same as the rest

I do the same. They dry faster and seem to be more lively when I do.
I’m not patient enough to just leave the hatchlings for days while the others hatch, but I usually just get them out once a day, to keep the humidity up for the rest of the eggs. However, last summer I saved a huge clutch of guinea eggs contaminated with broken eggs and smelling unspeakably bad. It was also an incredibly staggered hatch, a few a day for weeks! So, when I saw that one was hatching, I’d grab it as it was emerging, egg and all, so that the keet wouldn’t get into the nastiness coating the other eggs. I must say, it was so so cool to have that egg hatch in my hand! I had a typical heat light setup brooder with a small box on a heating pad that I’d put the hatchling in to dry off and recover before meeting it’s older siblings. I expected a lot of problems with this technique, but it actually went very well! Today though, I’m back to keeping the incubator closed until the end of the day...

I'm way behind on this hatch along. An update from my barnyard mix of franken' babies. We set 35 of them on the 23 of April after losing our roo the day before. Lockdown is Monday 11 with expected hatch starting the 14 to whenever they're finished. Of our original 35 we're down to 28. Based of our last 2 hatches we're leaps and bounds better this go around at least at this stage of the game. When we candled at about day 14ish we saw movement in almost all of the remaining eggs which was exciting so fingers crossed 🤞 for this hatch. A difference from our last hatches is I switched out the top unit from the ancient relic of an incubator for another one. This new top unit seems to be maintaining temperature much better without constant heat spikes.
