May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

My shipped order of 6 Silver Spitzhaubens were severely saddled. I couldn’t tell squat when the only two that hatched internally pipped. The saddle kind of grew in the same shape that they settled in. Fingers crossed yours are easier to tell!

This whole hatching thing is wonderful :) the other half thought I only had turkeys on the incubator. When I mentioned two of the chicks were deformed that hatched today, he was like “what chicks?” Lol
How are the emu doing?

So I FINALLY figured out how to get the humidity down. I have been working with this puzzle for 3 days now. I have a science background so it was driving me nuts that I could not solve this! Our family motto is "never give up". I tried the charcoal, didn't do much, I tried the salt/rice/baking soda, went up a little. So I thought I would try a dry sponge and it went UP 25%.:confused: Then I realized the packaged sponges that come in individual packs from COSTCO are a little moist when you unwrap them, so must have been the moisture in the sponge. I cut up the sponge into 3 pieces and "toasted" them in the toaster oven to dry them out. This WORKED, I can't believe it! Humidity promptly dropped 20%. I will monitor for several hours and see how I can adjust the humidity based on how many of these "sponges toasts" I place. So I wanted to share this with you out there on the forum. I am sure I am not the first person who has thought of this, but I am so excited it works. I cut up several more sponges and toasted them and put them in airtight containers, so they do not soak up the moisture in the air in the house and can switch them out with the ones in the incubator as needed.:)

Good so far. They’re currently in my 16 yr old daughter’s bed wearing diapers, sleeping.

They look at chickens as toys and chase them. Only the roosters have figured out that if you don’t run, they won’t chase you.

Goose getting his groove on...

I LOVE them!!!

I am so glad I am not the only one who would seriously be obsessive like this. I get frustrated when I know I should be able to fix something and can’t. Medical laboratory scientist here🥼👩‍🔬🔬 I’m always tinkering with things like I will figure this out. I just sold a pair of cockatiels though cause after a year I couldn’t figure out why they were repeatedly laying infertile eggs and my brain is irritated with my inability to sort it out. The avian vet close here won’t scope them so I’m like ok fine I’ll retire them but I don’t admit defeat easily

Lol, My friend and I were mildly obsessed over her rooster not providing fertilized eggs. We set eggs under her broody and in the incubator, cracked open sooo many eggs to check for bullseye's and she even sat out there and watched him to see what he was doing wrong. It was mildly hilarious because we were borderline prepared to try artificial insemination, just to confirm that he was indeed sterile. Fortunately it didn't come to that. I set 12 eggs from his favorite True Blue hens and 5 are developing beautifully in the incubator right now! :celebrate
