Broody chickens and first set of incubator quail eggs are due Tuesday.
While we can’t watch or know when the first broody baby hatches, I’d rather they take responsibility for a bad hatch, as well as brooding and acclimating to the others.

I think you're right, I'd take the trade off.

Day 19 here and one of my Swedish Flower eggs is rocking & rolling! I think I will have an early hatcher.

Hey guys
My broody silkie hen's is hatching out some chicks. She's got four under her so far, with two more to potentially hatch.
So far for colors she's got; 2 white, 1 black, and 1 white with black stripes. The last one reminds me of a partridge pattern but is white instead of brown.
Can't wait to see how she does as a first-time mama hen.

Next to her are a pair of broody silkies working together on a clutch of nine eggs. They should hatch mid-may but I'm always unsure of the exact date with broodies.

Just thought I’d ask here since I can’t seem to find the info elsewhere, but what is the correct height for a brooder plate? I have always used heat lamps but I have a brooder plate & wanted to give it a try.

It depends on the size of a chicks. It just needs to be high enough for them to squat underneath, and lay down without actually touching it. I’d say four inches. ChickenCanoe uses them.

Candled last Monday and had 10 of 12 eggs showing good development. One had veining but was questionable. One clear. Will candle again tomorrow to see how they are progressing. Due to hatch on Mothers Day!

End of day 19. Nothing yet. I usually have a chick or two that have hatched or pipped by now. This new incubator has me nervous!

I am day 19 or 20 - I know you're supposed to count the first day as 0, which would make this 19, but I didn't set my eggs properly and put them straight into a warm incubator after 8 hrs under a broody hen - what do you guys think?
Either way I am playing all the chicken music on YouTube now watching them roll around in their eggs! No chirps yet.
