May 2023 Hatch-a-long

I candled one....just one...of my 16 eggs today even though it's only day 5. I saw veins, a dark spot, and I swear I even saw movement!

I just needed that little pick me up. One of the eggs got a harder knock than I wanted while I was turning them and I hope it'll be okay, I feel bad for it. Definitely not enough to cause a crack, but still. It's a maran egg and I don't have a dark room to go into currently so I couldn't check on the one I was worried about, so I grabbed one of my light eggs to give myself a quick dose of dopamine. I'm doing something right!

I finally set my May hatch eggs tonight. May 14 there should be some more cheeping to tend to. I only set 41 this time so I can use a smaller brooder for another month. Once the Delaware hens start laying a large size egg I'll do 41 of them and 41 RIR's monthly. I'm waiting very impatiently for the Bresse girls to get their act together.

Don't you know that as brooders are never big enough and the same goes for incubators... I have my sights set on 2 new incubators. 1 that holds 180 eggs and one 60. The 60 is a hatcher allowing for 60 eggs per week to be set in the 180 model. Wife thinks I'm a glutton for punishment.

My 22 egg that I over stuff is more than enough since I have been hatching too much as is. Lol

My first incubation was 8 eggs (That's the max my incubator held) and now I'm hatching 18 and it feels like a LOT. "Only 41" made me LOL too.

Candled the four duck eggs I tossed in the incubator to check for fertility, and we have development!

Now lets see if I can manage a *28* day incubation!!!

Ok here is the explanation of "only 41". Originally I had planned on setting 82. I use 2 41's for setting and 2 for hatching so I keep 2 clean and don't ever remove the turner. Some days I'm on mad side of things but at least I have a method to my madness.

Set my eggs today, 24 Swedish Flowers from my flock, might end up being a couple of half Buff Orpingtons in there too. Last hatch I got all black & brown chicks, hope to get some blues this time. Hatch day will be May 15.

Put 11 more duck eggs in, since the 'test' ones showed fertile. We shall see.

Oh, I should toss something in to hatch on my birthday too! May 28th! But I'll have to wait a bit for that.
