MAY HATCH-A-LONG come join in

For all of you out there who have only candled a little or are experienced but have come across another "iffy" egg, if there's room in the bator at lockdown time then there's no harm at leaving those iffys in as long as there is no smell, cracks or ozing. If you do decide to toss eggs, then always crack them open over a paper towel over the trash can (I usually snap a crack in them with a table knife). By looking at the contents & remembering what they looked like at candling, you will learn a lot for future candling. In the beginning, I was sure that some eggs were gonners, took them out & half heartedly cracked some open to find the occasional live one or two. It taught me a lot & I'm much more cautious, which gives the eggs a chance to hatch (albeit a slim chance).

Happy hatching everyone! Have fun playing with your chicks & appreciate every single one of them. They are such miracles & what a joy to be a part of it.

Almost forgot to post, I'm finally joining in! Started a new batch Saturday morning in the incubators of shipped Bantam BS & S Faverolles eggs from Henry 'hcammack' in Maryland. 6 eggs had intact air cells from shipping & 5 had loose air cells, so I split them into 2 bators for now. They were settled in an egg carton on the counter overnight with wide end of egg up. They are due on 5/28.

My 1st batch from the same breeder came out great with 2 keeper pullets, won't need the other roos hatched. This 2nd batch will be from a different combo of chickens to add to my keepers of breeding stock. Very happy to have this 2nd opportunity to hatch some more.

There's only 2 incubators, not 4 as seen with the mirror behind them. You can see my latest brainstorm on temp guages in each bator. After frustration of which of my numerous temp guages were the most accurate, I'm now very happy with the Brinsea Spot Check digital thermometer with probe (very accurate) & glass thermometer inside the "water wiggler" (one green & one blue, someone gave me directions on how they made their own wiggler), these show what the inside temp of an egg would be; both my new Brinsea digital & the glass one read the same. My Sprinfield is still being used for humidity (calibrated it), but not for temps. Feeling a lot more at ease about the temperature. Happy hatching everyone!!

I candled my 15 bantam polish eggs and had to toss 6
sad.png
2 were non developed and 4 seemed to be about 7-10 days along (which is about when I had a power outage) the remaining nine are so full of chick that I can only see the aircell and dark area where the chick is and a few veins I'm on day 16 so hatching is right around the corner

As for the dozen blrw eggs one was no development and the rest are looking more promising

I am super stressed about the temp, either my incubator is not holding well or the thermometers are messed up but I have to keep tinkering with the thermostat to keep the temp up and I keep worrying i'm frying them i'll be glad when they hatch

My broody #1 is due tomorrow... usually eggs under my broodies start hatchin a day early. I wanna look under her sooooooo bad to see whats goin on BUT I'm not! Guess that would be just like taking the bator lid off the bator.

LUCKYDUCK: My lockdown is this Friday, too! Of the 23 eggs left at last night's candling, one quit about Day 7 (darn, a SLW!)... but the rest are kicking their little feet, so -- with extreme luck on USPS eggs -- if all hatch it'll be 8 SLW's and the rest Red/Black Star sex-links. I'm REAL excited as this is my first hatch in, oh, about 15 years.

My Hatch-a-holic fever was in remission, and then I started reading BYC one day.... Oops! Back big time!

CRYSMOM: What kind of thermometer are you using? Hopefully not an Accu-Rite.... I had very dismal results with that and went back to the liquid filled ones.

GRUNDAIL01: Bummer days! Sorry to hear about your temp woes.... At least the finger is not pointed at operator error on this but external factors. It's th pits when you do everything right and the unforeseen circumstance element from nowhere blindsides your efforts. Fingers crossed that what you have left all works....

NAMBLE: Good luck on your hatch... Pics please with the results!

INCUBATING IS FUN and ILLIA: Thanks for the cute pics!
