May hatch-a-long

Most of the chicks I've had under broody hens have hatched at day 21 or sometime day 22 so hopefully you'll have a chick soon, I know it's hard to be patient though!

I candled the egg that was no longer rocking/peeping and there was no movement so I decided to make a little hole in the air cell. The chick had pipped internally but had a really severe scissor beak and must have been unable to break through the shell and had died :(

The two that hatched seems to be doing well though (although the warren x is quite small compared to the dorking x).
thanks im so sorry about your chick :th

Thank you, it's a shame to lose a chick, but I'm almost glad it passed before it could hatch as I think it would have had to have been culled as it was really very bad.

I've got 6 Brahma eggs due next Tuesday so everything crossed for a good hatch with them! Plus 9 eggs under my Dorking which I'll candle on Thursday this week.

That is a 50/50 possibly good becuase it has broken into the air sac. But possibly bad becuase it may be malposistioned. It might be a good idea to do a safety hole and check things out

No more pips that I can see. But it is only day 22.

I came home to a new chick. So far 10 of the 13 that made it to lockdown have hatched.

Tomorrow night I plan to candle again unless there is one or more with an external pip.

It seems that a 77% hatch rate is respectable. But perhaps it was beginners luck.

Pictures of the new one tomorrow when the light is better.

As planned the single chick is still in the incubator tonight. I did put a little food on a paper towel in case.

I was worrying about how to make water accessible and had an idea.

I put a cap from a milk jug near the food and put some water in it.

This new hatchling should be okay with the others right? Or do I need to keep it separate for a day or two?
