The eggs that just came are beautiful! The picture doesn't do justice on the blue colors of course. But, I am ready for blue eggs again. Have been getting OE colors, now I want some blue blues! Nice eggs for sure.
She asked me if I wanted the Ameraucana eggs..she put extras in. Looks like a marans
and a few F1 OE's. I will be getting some blue eggs this fall if these hatch well.
Sorry to hear it, Fernie. When my son was 10, he raised barred Plymouth Rock hens in a 4-H project. The ones we recieved were docile, large, personable and a delight to have around. I have had many experiences with chickens that were not what I had read to expect of them. Right now my two tamest hens are leghornXorp crosses. These two are lap chickens, one particularly likes being held and they both jump into the swing with me when I pat the cushions beside me. Who would expect a Leghorn rooster to sire such sweethearts? On the other hand, I have an EE who I dubbed "problem child" here because it screamed bloody murder when I had to get it up at dusk. It ran headlong into fences; it bothered the other chicks; and was anything but tame.

they just grow too freaky fast. try everything once, right?
they use a specific genetic line of rocks and cornish to create the cross, which is bred for super fast growth. they are ready to be processed at 8 weeks old! that's crazy fast... the breast meat grows so thick, it's like 2 breasts. 1 breast weighs 14-15oz (almost 1 lb) and feeds 2 people. in fact, Foster Farms processes their CornishX at 44.5 days, to get the perfect sized breast meat (6wk)
I didn't like their behavior. they were gross. they would not forrage, or "free range" they would just lay down in front of the feeder and eat all day. they didn't care if they were covered in their own poop. the meat tastes fine, I guess, but I have heard that it is a bit "plain." chickens who eat grass and bugs have better flavor than those who only eat grain, like my cornishX did.
this will be my first year using heritage cross breeds as my meat chickens, so it's a work in progress and we'll see how it goes!
