May Hatch-a-Long!

Pics

just caught up on the thread, day 18 for me! 31? eggs in that batch if I remember right. Day 10 for the next set, had to toss 3 clears last night so 7 left. I will be moving the day 18's to the hatcher/still air this evening. I haven't been collecting more eggs to set in their place....yet..... ;)

We all carry the weight of "Yet...." for me its waiting for now to get the extra girls I added to my BSL pen to fertilized by the BA and the old BYM sperm dilute. Then I will set a large batch of 1 for trying to sell..

I also have the dilemma of what eggs to set in which hatcher. I have 2 LG still airs that I use for hatching, this next round anyway. I have RIR, WLH, BSL and Meat Project. My issue is that the Meat project have both black and white chicks coming out. Don't know if I'll have room for BSL/WLH/RIR in 1 hatcher. Which is about the easiest way I can hatch them. The WLH and RIR are more important to me since these are the only fertile eggs for those pure breeds. And I will not be getting more, until my roosters mature this summer/fall. Almost hoping home flock eggs end with a few clears..... that's sad.
I am thinking my Rouens due on the 1st can sit in a lower shelf in the homemade bator and hatch there, did this last year when I had like 4 batches all hatching at once. Ducks/chickens and guineas all hatched. That incubator always holds a lot of humidity no matter what. Could use better incubators but I do fine with these I have and am happy w/o high dollar machines. I seem to have better luck with el'cheapos that a lot of people do with state of the art products.
.

I have two bators. Both styrofoam little giants with turners. One still air, one with a fan. The fan one so far has outdone itself. The still air gave me 7 out of 41. The fan gave me 33 so far, 3 more pips, 1 wiggling, 4 eggs just sitting. I can't complain! All the eggs were from my girls and roo I have here. So no shipping or egg handling issues there. So I just got a fan to install on my still air and see if that helps.

Hope I am not too late, I just put 24 eggs in the incubator.

Nope, I am putting more in tonight.

Did "eggtopsies" today.

Results:

51 eggs set --

  • 30 chicks hatched
  • 16 clears/infertile/never developed/scrambled from shipping
  • 5 lost chicks (3 were full term, and 2 were quitters: one was quite small (4 days?) and one was around 14 days)

Is it normal to lose 3 full term chicks? They were all bantams.

...So, if I count the developers, I got 30/35.

sound like a good hatch!! I had 2 full term that died during lockdown last year.. no idea why.. they were absorbing the yolk too...maybe they were malpositioned and couldnt pip. idk. but still .. Congrats!!

Thanks!

I'm not sure at all either. It looked like the yolk wasn't absorbed.

I'm on day 20 and just heard the first chirp from my incubator! I can't see all my eggs, but I have one starting to pip. I guess it's time to find some outside chores to try to make myself do so I won't sit here glued to the bator

Next thing I need is a web cam to connect to my incubator. EggCam! If I did, I wouldn't get anything done at work. The kids would go crazy throwing papers and where's the teacher? Watching his eggs.

That would definitely occupy some time! My hubby has forbid me from traveling up north though because every time we do I don't want to come home ;)

Hoping to get checking soon as I was down last night gonna set Rouen eggs into lockdown... and had a roller. 1st time I thought I bumped machine then I waited... and it was rocking by itself. Having the 2 and 3 y/o up with me in the morning keeps me from hovering of hatches... most days. So they get plenty of time to get ready and go before I get urges to mess with anyone.

May have been false alarm. Just a quick check though so the 2 lil ones didn't destroy the house.
