May Hatch-a-Long!

I hope I get som roosters out of this. One would be nice. Already have 3:D

where are you? out of 18 Easter HAL chicks, I think I have at least half that are little Roos. 2 out of 2 Wheaten Marans are Roos, half of my Speckled Sussex are Roos I think,1 out of 1 Silver Birchen Maran is a Roo, more in my BYM chicks, and on and on. Then none of my 18 May HAL SIlver Birchen Maran eggs hatched...so now I am letting my Super Broody hens sit on their own BCM and OE only. I only wish I had SBM eggs to give them now...from someone local to me and where they didn't need to be shipped.

I have eggs in the incubator and eggs under a broody Silkie hen. I only have 4 eggs in the incubator that are due to hatch today and when I left for the drs earlier this afternoon, there were no sounds or pips or anything. I just got back to find one Ameraucana chick completely hatched out and running all around inside the incubator. Then youngest son come in and tells me the broody Silkie has peeping coming from under her. She is quite able to brood more chicks than she has eggs under her, so I take the Ameraucana chick and pop it under her, along with her newly hatched Silkie chick.

I know its just May, but when is the last day you would start a batch of eggs? What do you use as a reasoning for your decision? Weather, age of chicks, ? Thanks

I've started/hatched eggs every month of the year.

Although having a nicely insulated barn wire for electric, with brooders of graduated sizes helps.
Last winter we had lows of -20°F (yes, that's MINUS...and not counting the wind chill), and we often get summers in the triple digits for days on end, so needless to say I've utilized my share of heaters and fans.

Well I put 5 Muscovy eggs and 11 BYM chicken eggs in lockdown this morning. Hatch should be Friday, so excited. My second hatch for the year and incubator is working much better this go around, thanks to this site and suggestions of how to fix it. Last year at this time I was on my 5th hatch. Had to restrain myself this year. Current flock is 50 adult chickens, 14 6 weeks old, 1 (3day old hatched by broody Black Betty) and 8 Muscovies. Love my birds. Waiting on fuzzy butts.
