Same here JNJ. Last May hatch coming up. Then a week to straighten everything out again for next batch. Not counting broodies. Some mutts some experiments some sexlinks. Little bit of color and flash (I hope) BA, Leghorn,BO, Black SL, Silver laced Cochin, RIR/Prod Red. Is whats in the gene pool. Hoping for something nice from the SLCx BO and Reds. We'll see soon we hope. Candled em tonight and I think no quitters lately.Tons of assists this year. Tons of internal pipping, then death. Wonder why? I never had issues like this hatching!
I have one more May hatch to go.
Since she hatched so late I'd probably take her to the brooder now, in case she spent alot of the yolk before hatching. A jam jar lid will be fine for the first few days. I also soak the chickenfeed for them for the first week. You should consider buying her some foster-brothers/sisters as they really aren't supposed to be alone. I've had a couple of lone hatchers and they both died early, and seemed so lonely for the days they lived that it was heartwrenching.Well - the little one survived the night!!!!!!
She was checked at 2am and the umbilical was totally detached - it looked ready to come off when we got her out. The umbilical was very thin and shriveled and the yolk what was left was just an empty sac. She did bleed quite a bit from that vein and even now this morning she has a dried blood patch on the back of her head where the foot was stuck to her!
I don;t think anyone else will make an appearence at this late stage?
You think we were running cool and wet????? The gages stayed between 37-39.5 ????? For temp and 45-55 for Humidity. THere must be something wrong with all three gages????
The little one has been doing house moving this morning. I got down to find she has re arranged thing to suit herself. The sponge in the middle of the Bator was moved to the side SHE was under the lamp! So I guess she might have been cold. I am worried about getting the temp right now if I can't trust the gages???I don;t want to make it too hot or too cold???? She is making a right old noise chirping and clambering over the other eggs. ( I guess the foot is ok now and no sign of the twisted toes etc she was hatched with they have come right over night with all her home improvements!) She has moved the other eggs right around the place. I think she was checking for pips??? I think she must be lonely as when she notices we are about she makes a great deal of noise and tries to get out of the bator!
When do I give her water???? WIll a jam jar lid be ok?
Also when should I put her into the brooder? She is a little darling!!!!! She is still not fluffed up and I think there is some yucky film on her feathers - she is preening herself so that is a great sign. She has the belly done and most of her wings but her back and head are still sticky and flat. I love her![]()
DH is thrilled - came down at the crack of dawn to check on her and said " oh my little lad come on now your doing great! " LAD????
GiRL!!!!! - Darn! It cannot be a rooster!!!
Oes
. That sux they normally don't start jumping till well after 10 days might wanna look at the pooody catRandom update on my hatch which are currently in the brooder -- one is currently missing. We suspect that the cats got him or he escaped and died at some point between 8PM-10PM. /sigh
Makes it a little painful since he was 1 of 4 and that this is my first set of baby chicks/chickens in general.
and toe biters lolThe chicks are hatching like popcorn here these days! Just went to check on the egg that I expected to hatch this afternoon, and guess what - the little bugger was sitting in the middle of the incubator all fluffed up and ready for the brooder! In the brooder things are okay, but it annoys me that I can't tell the buff orp chickies apart. I know one from his behaviour though - he's a real bully! I say he, cause the bullies usually turn out to be roo's...
