May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Ok so there is this snobby snooty lady on the hatch a holics page, she REFUSES to sell any hatching eggs to people who hatch in styrofoam incubators! Who died and left her hatch queen???? I was very shocked as I have known her for quite some time on many different sites and threads. She raises Tolbunts, and has told me she would be voicing her opinion to all Tolbunt sellers she knows. That these birds were too rare to let eggs go to waste and not hatch because they were placed into inferior incubators!!! I quit smoking 3 weeks ago today, and last night I got so upset I really wanted to smoke, but I didnt

Oh gosh I need to go check my bator....its styrofoam and I dont want it to kill my chicks! I now want to get a fabulous hatch just so I can show her!

I think she is missing the REAL issue ... which is that any SHIPPED eggs are a crapshoot, regardless of what incubator is being used. There are many, many examples of near perfect hatches using a Styrofoam still air incubator, including homemade ones. Many of these successes were, however, with local eggs. Scrambled shipped eggs would still be scrambled shipped eggs, even if they were placed in an expensive automated incubator. Humpty Dumpty could not be put back together again, and neither can scrambled shipped eggs.

There is nothing like waking up in the morning, checking the incubators, and everything being perfect! LOL I am such a nerd.

. Well said

I can relate to scrambled shipped / posted eggs!!!!!!!!

Guys I think we might have a dead lot again.
I have been watching the temp and humidity for days - and checked it about 4 pm it was sitting at 38 which is about 99.5/100 and humidity was 40% Just 2 hrs later DH came in and found the Temp sitting 110 and humidity 50%????????????? I know you lot said spike on the third day but what the heck happened - nothing was moved or changed except the humidity tray was filled up again.
I am really upset by this turn of events. I know they cannot survive in that kind of heat. We have moved the bator to the dinning room as it is cooler in there during the day. We managed to get the temp down pretty quick to 38.2 and humidity is still at 50% and is not comming down.

We will keep them untill day 7- and candle them. I guess we will see red rings all over! I am not hopeful and am very low right now.
You all seem to be having so much success and mine end up dead and scrambled no matter what we try.

I was thinking the same thing, but they came too fast, and then broke into a game of kickball with the remaining eggs.
Looking at these mixed birds brings back a flood of memories.
My father was a hard working man, working long hours to provide for us all. Because of his long work, it seems we had very little time together.
But each year he would order a chick mixture from Murry McMurray, and him and I would spend hours just sitting in the chicken coop, side by side on a couple old chairs, with the chicks at our feet, trying to guess what each one would turn out to be. Funny how a rag tag band of chicks can evoke such wonderful feelings!
Jim

They don't look so rag tag to me! They have the most gorgeous colors of blue gray...I was so hoping my Marans would hatch that gray color and many people work very hard to get nice looking olive eggers, but it looks like you will have a couple that will be nice olive eggers! All that for $8bucks? You did well and they will be fun to watch grow!

Wow...I had read/heard styrofoam incubators are more difficult to hatch in because it is easier to drown chicks. But hey, I have an incubator that is made out of styrofoam that we built too, so I'm not knocking them though...in fact, I have over a 95% growth rate in it right now due to hatch this Saturday(no, I am not counting chicks before they are hatched and realize they will probably not all hatch). The irony here is that she WILL ship them, right

? It seems to me that shipping would/will scramble the eggs more than any styrofoam incubator would, but they are her chicken's eggs and she has the right to sell them to whoever she wants. Maybe she likes to sell locally so a higher percentage hatch?

Don't start up smoking over this...it's totally not worth it (it will take away from your funds to buy eggs...lol). And there are other egg sellers out there. You will get the chicks you want

Wow... Some people just don't understand! Hope you do have a GREAT hatch!!! We'll have to work on finding you local Tolbunts! I will reach out to some peeps I know here... How far away are you from Lake Ozark?

I think about 2 hrs. I am pretty much Central Missouri Maybe just a little South. I have looked everywhere for eggs where I could pick them up. Or chicks for sale.
