May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

well now we have two chicks:) but looking at Melina's eggs, I dont think I have BO's anymore. My eggs were darker.
There are hundreds of different lines of buff orpingtons, so I'm sure the egg color can vary as can other traits within the breed. Mine come from a show-line, so they don't lay very well (150 per year per hen) and go broody easily, for example. But they look gorgeous, and taste even better and I'm very proud of them.

now both you and jn have chicks in your bra,s talk about broody hen,s lol

Well I have no clue what breeds mine were, because they were bought for eating eggs and once I found out they were fertile,in the bator they went xD I was just guessing. Yellow chick, orange feet, single comb.

Yea!!! Glad it's survived!!! Get a bra for your husband and he can help!! Lol!!

LOL sad fact is I read this and thought, "How funny would the wife look at me if I said, "I need to go to walmart and size a bra for myself." But then if I added the word chicken in the same phase it would consist of eye rolling and a low soft halfhearted groan and a "Whatever". LOL

And On a super plus size I been watching bator for 2-3 days cuz I ALWAYS have an early hatch. Bad temps from power outages etc had me thinking scrap my eggs and try again. Well I firmly put my foot down (To myself) and decided I would NOT do anything cept lockdown (Day early in case) and wait until Saturday before ANYTHING was done with the eggs. Last nite 1 am no sign of pips and was sure my hopes/eyes were tricking me when I saw eggs move (Swear I was halucinating.). 730am Checked bator BEFORE 1st cup of coffee (Thats almost sacrilage for me) and 2 pips WAHOOO.
By 9am 5 pips, couple broke thru already. That was 1 1/2 hrs ago been reading post. Feed water outside birds checking 2nd bator temp/humdidty etc. All the things that might keep me from hovering over my hatch. And now bak to see whats going on. Mutts/BYM/Whatchagets, is whats hatching. Set another batch yesterday which are sorted for breed or sexlink and almost a dz Silver Laced Cochin crossbreeds to see how they turn out.
Will post again later but might have a duck run (Pickup a drake for our hen and a trio of 2 1/2 month old buffs) to do today yet.

If the eggs were alot darker, could they be welsummers? Anyways, you'll have more of a clue as they grow up. Some yellow chicks turn white, some go buff. In a week you should be able to tell the color of the wing feathers at least. Keep us posted, I'm getting curious now! :)

HI all!! I have an additional question about late hatching if that's OK. I want to hatch out a few chicks from the two good layers I have. Since I haven't done this before and I only have two that I want to reproduce from, is there a way to keep the fertilized eggs for a couple days until I have 6 to incubate? That way I can start them all at once. If not, is it ok to start them in sequence and then just pull them out as they hatch?
Any constructive input appreciated.

. I love the mystery hatch ,,, me and the wife will look in the brooder as many times a day as we look in the bator and place bets on what is what ,,, it's like chicken las Vegas

Oh my gosh. This is my first hatch. I need to leave the house or I'll spend all day staring into the incubator. Lol. First pip last night and another this morning. Day 20 today. Still waiting on the others but I saw one egg wiggle and starting to hear peeps. So exciting!!

. Yes absolutely I myself use seven days as as a base line I have found that my eggs from my flock will have a 95% to 100% hatch rate when set at 7 days and under with the numbers decreasing quite a bit from 10 to 15 days I never have set eggs older than 15 days and these are eggs from my flock ( no shipped eggs ) store them in a egg carton with the small or pointy end down in a cool dark place 55- 70 degrees and set when ready,,,, disclaimer ,,,, this is what works for me results may vary ,,,, good luck
