May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

I have a new baby today! Yay little quail, and two chicks pepping as we speak they due tomorrow so they are early! Thats ok mothers day present to me! :) And here are my 6 hatchling from my Broody Hen that adobted these eggs lol
so cute
Well this is a long story... About a month ago I had a broody hen sitting on five eggs. I did not have high hopes, because I have a bantam brown leghorn rooster and full size hens... I assumed he could not "get the job done." I candled at day 7 and saw 6 clear, and one iffy. I tossed the six and left the "iffy" egg overnight, so I had a little time to use Google and see what the heck was going on in my egg. I came to the conclusion it HAD to be rotten... Only to crack it open and find a witto bitty bean sized embryo in there! CRAP!!!!! I explain it to my five and six year old boys, and tell them we'll try again soon... And then my broody decided she wasn't gonna be broody anymore! Well my six year old went to school and told his kindergarten teacher our horrible news, and she sent him home with an egg from her chickens! So I attacked BYC's homemade incubator page... I started with a cardboard box and a 60 watt bulb at first just so I could get it going and my son could see I was trying! Then I realized I had an old, broken "mini" fridge I could transform into an incubator!! Which I did and it took about a weekend with a little help from my hubby. (I took a ton of pics and soon I hope to figure out how to start my own thread and show you all how I built it!) So I've moved my lone egg (which is an ameraucana egg by the way, and the hen is tiny, which explains how my bantam roo "got the job done") into the fridge-a-bator. iTs day 12 and candeling shows its alive and well! So hopefully in a few days ill have a pic of a cute fluffy butt to upload! This is my first hatch by the way, yet i feel like an expert from reading on BYC! And I am ADDICTED already! Happy mothers day!!
what a feet story

I have ducklings! I didn't expect to get any because this hen is a flyer and spent little time with the drake as far as I could tell. I thought that she had spent too much time on the nest and the eggs were probably all infertile. Then this afternoon my daughter started yelling,"ducklings!!"

I went to see and, sure enough, there were LOTS of ducklings! I counted 18!!

This is a muscovy hen and this is her first time setting eggs and I am so proud of her! Her name is Winner and she lived up to her name again today. So I guess I can join the May hatch thread now that I have some newly hatched ducklings!
18 ducklings! Ohmigosh! Wonderful, congrats! Photos please?

i found this poor guy with broody #1 he pipped yesterday so we left him with mom and his family with the intent of finding him hatched and running with the pack when we returned home this afternoon looks like he rolled out and hit the deck he was in the same position as when he pipped so we thought a lil assistance was in order here is the little crash rat after digging him carefully out of the train wreck after a few hours drying and fluffing up I'm my candling box with a improvised warmer ,,,,,,,chicken people always ready to improvise gotta love it,,,,lol
Awesome! What a lucky little guy that you were able to assist. Gotta love it when we assist and they make it, it's a good feeling knowing they'd be dead in the shell if we didnt help.

Let us know how it goes!

Let us know how it goes!

Well I woke to find pages of unread posts again so I am as usual way behind you all. It is the time line - gets me everytime you are all awake while I am sleeping! lol

We tried to candle last night and got all eggsited only to find we were struggling with it and couldn;t really see anything at all. After DH turned the egg severel times and locked us in a dark cupboard we gave up! I thought we were in more danger of dropping the egg! SO it went back. I will try again when I get myself in order and the hands stop shaking! I thought I could see a wee dark spot but I didn;t see any veins which worried me much!

As for a new Bator we made one before and it had a fan in it and all but this time we chose to buy one a still air because the one we made only gave us two live chicks the rest died and were shrink wrap. But then we never had a humidity monitor then! So we may get it back up and running.

Oes

I'm almost in your time zone, just one hour difference between Ireland and Norway :) A dark spot is a good sign! Try again in a few days and see if you can see any veining.

Where in Ireland are you located? I have a fostermom that moved there three years ago. She's in Ballina/Killaloe :)

. Yea Mel we were upset to return home and find this lil guy on the floor don't know why I'm sure mom did not kick it out with intention it was very cold and just barely moving when found , so first step was to rig something to warm the egg and him to see if a assist was even a option after a hour or so in the converted egg warmer upper lol his movement increased and we decided to go ahead and assist the hatch he was fully developed with a fully absorbed yolk sac after the assist he lay lifeless for several hours as I'm sure his trip to the edge was trying I put a few drops of electrolytes in him with a syringe and by 1 am he was dry and warm to the point of standing , I'm happy to report he was reunited with mom and the rest of his brood this AM and is doing great !
