last chick out of 5 eggs just hatched, WOW!!! 5 out of 5 eggs!! 2 where unfertile, but those don't count

i had a yellow Surprise on my last hatch and have spent the last week staring at this dude in the brooder trying to figure out where and what he is lol then this morning it hit me like a hammer i only had one white breed in the hatch but thought i had them all correctly marked on the crown of the eggs at day nine when i candled ( yes i said day nine) i hate to candle i want them all to be good and hate to pull the bad ones but it is inevitable lol any hoo i had set 18 light Sussex and had my hopes set as always to get a breeding trio but will settle for a pair , any way ( rambling ) they were all clears and one was to dark to tell for sure so i culled all but the iffy that ended up not hatching thinking all 18 were a bust but i will be ( insert explicit here ) that this guy is showing white wings with black wing Barr just like a Sussex i guess i missed one when i marked and set go figure lol e

its hard to say moll as they all hatch out grayish with two strips down the back and the lavender or blue gene is resesive so its a wait and see kinda deal

ok guys so
1 dont add water until lock down.  
2 put eggs in a carton in a cool, dry, dark place when they arive for 24 hours
3 for 18 days in the turner and
4 at lock down put them in egg cartons

is that right

When you lock them down in egg cartons you should trim down the sides of the cartons just a little and cut out a small hole in the bottom of each egg spot to allow for good air circulation.

I am sorry but June is not going to happen this year for me as we are away for most of June so sadly no one here to turn the eggs!
My DD is minding everything and she is very good to do that but it would not be fare to expect her to tend eggs! Mybe next year!
IT is nice that I will be missed from the hatch threads as I have not posted much this month. I got very upset and low over all the losses so was glad to just leave it a while.

Ha ha I love that you had a very late arrival, It would be interesting to find out what is the very last day anyone managed to hatch a live chick. The latest I had was Blue day 27 and Omlet day 28. Both needed help. Like you they were about to be tossed. DH and I only kept this load of eggs as long as we did because of Blue and Omlett, We eggtopsied on Day 25 and were right to do so this time the only other two fully formed chicks were dead, Nothing in any of the rest of the eggs. So we ended up with little lonely Eggbert.

We went to our friends today ( The fellow I gave Blue and Omlett to ) His yard was full of all sorts of chickens. I asked him about Blue and Omlett. He told us the sad news that my beautiful rare breed cream crested legbar Blue had died over the winter. Not too surprised as they are very exposed to the cold winds up on the hills and we lost 3 hens to the bitter winds here comming off the sea as we are also in an exposed area. But the good news he said is that he has Blues son running about the yard and Omlett my dear sweet baby who was sooo ill and sick is still alive!!!! Running about and there are quite a few more cuckoo maran hens about too so he is also a daddy! I can't believe out of the 4 roos we had that year Duck and Big red, Who went to live on a local farm ( where they killed them!) and Blue and Omlett who went to the petting farm. Of all of them the very very sickest chick is the one that is still living! My day 28 hatchling! There is always hope!

That aside the best news is - when we were there we told him that we had a lone day old chick and asked if he had anything - he smiled and said come with me! We went to his hatching shed and there inside he explained. He was checking on the hens the day before and found a little chick laying on the ground without a sign of the mother. He has no idea where it was from and what it is? He scooped this tiny thing up from the bator and gave it to me. OMG it was a little yellow fluff ball almost identical to eggbert! I stuffed him in my blouse to keep him warm and we brought him home. He didn't even cost me anythign because we had given him two roos a few years back and he owed us a chick or two! lol When we got home I put the new baby in with Eggbert and they are exactly the same size! Eggbert seems a little stronger but then he didn;t spend any time out in the cold! I guess they are both lucky. Isn't that amazing that there was another little orphaned chick just waiting for a friend! SOmetimes I think God is great! how does he do that?????

love the pics of the babies oes. So happy you saved two babies now. We will be waiting to hatch with you next year but please drop in and say hi and give updates on your babies.

Lol I just had lunch with the wife in town and she just ordered me yes I said ordered me to build another grow out pen for her American chickens the gringo birds lol she told me her other grow out pen was fine for her costa rican peeps but not for her American birds because it does not have a enclosed top to keep out hawks I was laughing so hard I was in tears I asked her why this hatch was so different from the other gringo birds like the hamps and she said she has waited for over a year for her silver laced and by god they will grow out in our bedroom before she let's any thing kill them before she can breed and hatch more lol she is a trip too darn funny

simple,,,, toss out all the stuff we have been taught by the experts on incubating and hatching and abuse the crap out of your sets dont give a hoot about temps and humidity and throw caution to the wind

Well it has been a long day. My girls 15 and 13 were working and riding horses today. My 13 was on our paint and he spooked and took off with her and started bucking. On third buck she flew off. Called 911 and ambulance came out and took her in. After many hours and a kind staff. We have found out a chip is broke off of her L2 verterbe and has to wear a back brace. She already has scoliosis and this verterbe is in the middle of a curve in her back. So now we have a dr apt coming in her near future. So glad that is all that is wrong with her. She is definitely one tough cookie. And strong like her grandpa who was a bull rider. I guess you could say she is a chip off the old block. Lol.

I just heard what I thought was a peice of pottery falling off the shelf it was one of them Cochins finishing his zip and flopping out on the floor of the bator lol man what a big chick these guys are first cochins I have ever hatched
