They can’t! It had to have been something with skinny long arms that viciously yanked it through. Poor little guy.

Raccoons can't reach thru, let alone drag anything thru, 1/2" x 1/2"....go measure again.
Weasels don't grab like raccoons, they lack the dexterity.

Put a game camera up , set some live cage traps up and you will be surprised what you can catch . Honey buns , eggs, cat food or twizzlers to catch coons, guarantee you have a coon being a bad boy/girl

I just don't see how a head could fit through there. The skull would have to be crushed into tiny pieces and the skin would have had to be torn into a long noodle. Seriously not trying to be insulting, but are you sure his head isn't somewhere in that feather pile? Or like aart said and the openings are actually bigger than 1/2"?

If the coon wants it if they can fit their arm in the hole they will literally rip apart whatever they have in their hand just to get a little piece of it , I had a coon do the same thing , one if the chicks he grabbed lost his leg he pulled it straight off , the chick is fine and has adjusted to one legged life while some of the others were not so lucky, caught him the next night in live cage trap. They will pull and pull until it comes it doesn’t matter how big the chicken is and how small the hole is

True, but with the OP's situation the size of the mesh is in question.

Yup, one inch! I thought we used the leftover stuff from our main coop but my husband said he bought new.
