Just witnessed my 4 month Roo and one of the hens mate. It looked violent. Is this normal? Don't laugh lol but I'm a newbie.

It is rather violent. Lots of grabbing the neck feathers. Sometimes the hen submits and sometimes she runs.

Chickens breed. They don't make love. Roosters can be very violent at times. The older your chickens get, the more toned down everything will become.

It can seem violent especially with a young rooster. Often they will mellow with age and maturity. Just keep an eye on your hens for injuries that may need to be tended to.

Now see I once had a rooster who would tend to his hens, they adored him, sat with him, he would dance and ask, and would only mate if the hen agreed, I miss Cacklepants. Most roosters aren't nice and most hens aren't asking, but when they are that young the girls don't want anything to do with that yet. So sometimes I pen the rooster up until the girls catch up with them.
