MCMURRAY

I've ordered 3 times, always received extras and wonderful customer service.

I placed an order with them early this year. I ordered bantam mille fleur and porcelain d'uccles, golden-laced cochins, and sultans. I was very happy with the order. I think I received around 25-27. All arrived alive but I did have one die a few days later (he was very small, I don't think he had a very good start to begin with). They are now about 5 months old now and are very beautiful birds, I am very pleased with them. I am looking forward to ordering more cochins from them next year.

I have ordered from McMurray for over 30 years, usually 25 layers and 25 cornish cross each spring. I will address my experience based on some of the comments I have seen below.

The customer service I have found to be very good, however, the ladies that answer the phone are order takers and over the years I have only come across a couple of ladies who knew anything about chickens. It is seasonal unexperienced help.

If you want show quality to do not order from MM. I have never had an issue with the health or mortality rates with MM birds but they do not buy from breeders who breed for quality. I can honestly say I have never had a chick arrive dead. Remeber once they leave the hatchery there is a lot out of their control. They can't control a airline or postal worker leaving the chicks sit in extreme tempatures for too long etc. so it does not necessarilly reflect on the quality of the bird.

I order sexed birds except for the cornish cross. This year I did get two roosters (now I have to make soup) but usually the group is 100% female. Oh by the way, I always tell them I do not want extras or the "free" exotic chick, in my experience it is a rooster. I tell them I only want the extra chick(s) if they can assure me of a hen. They usually don't send it.

Order your chicks early. They have a limited supply of certain chicks. I have not always gotten what I wanted when I order say the first of April for a first of May shipment.

I ordered my RIR from MM. Ordered 23 pullets and 2 roosters, got exactly what I ordered and only lost 1 chick, Would order from them again. Since IOnly wanted a doz, sold half and made a profit now Ihave 12 hens and 1 roo which is just what Iwanted . Myonly problem was I had to order 25 chicks, but i can't complain since I did sell half of them, so I recommend them.

Pet quality birds...delivered all 26 healthy & active. All 26 made it to adult hood--but definately were not worth the $ as far as quality. Also, spend the extra $$ to get hens--I ordered ST RUN & got 17 roosters out of 25 birds. My free "exotic" chick was an Ameracauna rooster.

If you're not interested in showing or breeding for quality, they should be okay. The hatchery with the best quality I've found is Cackle. Meyer is also good....

The catalog is free just call them.

I agree order for sex it is worth the price. Several years ago I made the mistake of ordering straight run. 75% of my order was roosters! We like chicken soup, dumplings etc but 39 roosters was too much even for the two of us. I ordered Plymouth Rock and RIR and the roosters in my opinion are not worth butchering until they are too tough for anything but soups.

I called MM because I was thinking 50/50 at worst. I was told that most people order pullets and when after they fill the orders for pullets the straight run orders are filled and the majority of chicks left in the boxes are roosters. They did give me a small credit for my next purchase because they wanted to try and make me happy.
